I like wooden open plan with a calm feel and different textures, similar to the big house little house

What do others like?

I would have started this thread if you hadn’t already, OP. I don’t need to click on the negative trending thread to know it’s full of snobbery about grey / bifold doors / kitchen islands.

I love a well-thought out kitchen that has been designed by a cook. I especially love copper pans; Julia Child had a pegboard wall in her kitchen full of them.

I also really enjoy the current resurgence of colour and pattern, and appreciate the skill of the designer when what appears to be a riot of colour and print is actually carefully co-ordinated and therefore feels vibrant and cheerful without being overwhelming or busy.

Calm and peaceful.

I don't like noisy colours in my living space as it over stimulates me. Little pops of colour to bring in some joy but mainly creams (no magnolias!) and neutrals here. Complimented with golds and brass colours.

Pretty things but not too fussy. My rule is no more than two ornaments per surface.

Cushions and fluffy throws are a must. Swapped out for cooler throws in warmer months.

I try to bring in a Hygge Vibe but with a minimalist twist. Highly recommend the book "the little book of Hygge"

Lamps and little pockets of light. Big light on is just a hard no. It's either full day time natural light or low light by night. No in-between 😂.

Depends on the room. In general I like high ceilings, a few dark wood antiques, lots of books, Persian rugs, light on pale painted walls, pictures with texture (woodcuts, linocuts, embroideries) plain fabrics, wooden floors, a slightly faded look. I tend to end up with a mix of medium and dark woods in reality which works fine, and when I say 'antiques' I like a mix of eras.

I don't like lots of cushions anywhere but especially not on beds. What a waste of time.

I like a whole mixture of styles. Handmade stuff, prints, paintings, photos, big plants, books ...
Mostly, though - l like houses to look as if the people who live there filled them with stuff that made them happy. I like checking out other people's choices, even if l wouldn't fancy whatever it is myself.

I rather like mad design schemes, however they come - if it pisses off the Good Taste Police then l can always find a bit of admiration, however weird it looks!

Rooms with things which have come from family or which mean something - perhaps reflect an interest. All my furniture is either hand-me-down or bought from junk/antique/bric-a-brac shops/ebay. It's not shabby, but it is mismatched in a nice kind of way. Bought Multiyork sofas off eBay and had them recovered, as well as a junk-shop bergere suite which we had reupholstered - all for a fraction of the price of posh new furniture - and solid wood, too, which is hyper expensive to buy new.

I collect damaged Art Nouveau pottery (damaged because I can't afford the perfect ones!!) from junk and charity shops and little paintings. We also have lots and lots of books and lamps. I love the restful pale greens/creams/ochres of my room, with rugs for a bit of extra colour and all the stuff I've collected. There's quite a bit of subdued William Morris going on - nothing too loud or extreme though!

This would be some people's idea of a nightmare..I know! But I would absolutely hate black leather sofas, no rugs and white walls with a massive telly. When we come to sell, though, I expect I'll have to make it much more minimalist to appeal to other people - it's not everyone's cup of tea.

I grew up in a house like this, it was modern ground breaking design at the time and I loved it, though my current place is victorian and I like that too.

JumpinJellyfish · 12/02/2024 19:47

I love mid century modern and Art Deco in the appropriate buildings.

For living and bedrooms I like softness and pattern- carpet, rugs, curtains, cushions, wallpaper.

This is what I love. Greens/teals with worn in, comfy leather sofas

Homely, cosy, lived in, full of treasured things old and new.

DisruptiveCumin · 14/02/2024 12:57

Open plan is definitely not my thing, I like doors as they mean privacy lol
Color-wise, I really like lighter palette for the walls and a bit darker tones for the flooring. I have a space visualizing software and have used it multiple times for renovation planning and I've always hated open plans even in the picture 😁
