£1k for 2 RyanAir tickets?

I would like to take DD to see her grandparents abroad (Southern Europe, 2.5 hr flight), my Mum is not well and we need to make this trip. We can only go during the May half term holidays. Just checked and the cheapest option would be easyJet, £700 for the two of us. Ryan Air is selling at £1000. I understand that school holidays are pricier times , and there is an argument that flights should be priced up for environmental reasons, but I have never seen anything like this. It's lucky we only have one child and DH is not coming! Are you experiencing the same or am I just very unlucky?

If you need to make the trip, then cost should not be a consideration
'Southern Europe' covers a whole host of travel options; train, driving, flying, mixture of all? Couldn't you explore cheaper travel

Tereseta · 12/02/2024 07:40

That seems high, have you used sky scanner and tried different departing airports? May be easier to travel in uk and fly from a different one?

Shouldhavebutdidnt · 12/02/2024 07:41

I’d also be tempted to leave / come back a couple of days into term to save money & have a longer visit. I say that as a teacher

Sodndashitall · 12/02/2024 07:42

Have you checked further airports and then add hire car. Also I find flying not on the weekend of half term cheaper. Cuts your holiday a bit short to fly out Monday but maybe worth it

soupfiend · 12/02/2024 07:42

We visit family regularly in a nearby EU country and once seating options are chosen and boarding, etc, our tickets are nearly always 800ish

Problem is I like to know where Im sitting and I like to have leg room, so it makes it costly

A good few years I came back to the UK for the week before Christmas, returning to the Mediterranean island we lived on on the 23rd December.
Island to UK... tickets were £35
UK to Island.. £350 each!

Its supply and demand. Holiday destination, school holidays... the cheap tickets go quick.

I wouldn’t fly Ryanair if they paid ME £1K.

there must be a better way?

Eurydice84 · 12/02/2024 08:05

I normally fly BA and in August last year we paid £700 for two of us. Now BA is selling 2 tickets for May half term holidays at £2,000.

I would consider what the circumstances are that you can/can’t change. If the dates are non negotiable, could you look at leaving on the Tuesday/Wednesday once the holidays have already begun?

What airport are you looking at leaving? Can that be changed?

I just booked my Easter break flights this week and went for British airways, who in the end were cheaper than easyJet, Ryanair and wizz when the whole flight was taken into account.

BranchGold · 12/02/2024 08:07

can you tell us what country/airport?

Have you tried a different airport and then train or coach transfers?

LittleOwl153 · 12/02/2024 08:10

There does seem to be a higher cost in air travel currently. I was looking yesterday as ryanair seem to have a 'summer sale' on but it seems to be raising our usual flights not lowering.

As others have said try neighbouring airports and trains to relocate ones there or even here.

iwannacoolrider · 12/02/2024 10:28

I'm travelling to Tenerife in May half term and paid £700 return for 2 adults 1 child using easyJet and British airways..
The same flights are now £1800. You need to book within days of them being released, are you using Skyscanner?

ohtowinthelottery · 12/02/2024 10:40

I've just booked some Ryanair flights for Southern Spain for May (although not half term). The difference in prices between booking on a Saturday compared to say Monday or Tuesday were staggering. Have you looked at midweek prices? Presumably you don't need to book for 7 nights if you're staying with relatives.
