Holiday booking muck up

Dandelionpicker · 11/02/2024 20:29

Posting here for traffic. I know I've not been unreasonable but I have been a tit.

My mum died last year, before she became unwell, she and my dad had lots of amazing holidays all over the world. My dad had a monotonous job but was able to let his hair down and properly be himself when on his holidays. He offered to take me and my family (dh, dd17 and ds10) on holiday.

Getting what everyone wants from a holiday has been somewhat tricky. My dad wanted to go somewhere on the Carribbean sea and would be more than content to spend 2 weeks chilling by the pool. We've never done a holiday where you're mostly in a resort and it was important to my dd there be places she can visit and sports/ activities for DH and ds. We were also limited as wanted to travel from our local airport. After many, many hours of research and planning, we settled on a hotel in Mexico.

I sat with my dad to book online with TUI (he's dyslexic so I took the lead). I opened a new window at one point to get the discount code. Got the confirmation through, and the booking is for a different hotel that in all our research we hadn't even looked at and different dates (3 days later than intended). Noticed straight away but TUI are closed.

In a bit of a panic now. Does anyone know if there is a 24 hour cooling off period or has anyone stayed at the Riu Cancun?

Can't believe I've done this😱

I imagine it will be easily sorted with a phone call @Dandelionpicker...possibly an admin fee to change it. Try not to worry, I'm pretty sure it can be sorted :-)

I think you will have a 24 hour cooling off period - check your confirmation email using keyword search for 24 hours or cooling.

Pineapplewaves · 11/02/2024 20:34

Yes you can cancel the holiday if it's within 24 hours of booking it. Call them first thing tomorrow, as soon as they open.

hmrcwhatnow · 11/02/2024 20:35

Email immediately so you have registration of the issue.

Elvis1956 · 11/02/2024 20:40

Doesn't the distance selling regulations which cover online sales allow for a 14 day cooling off period. If you paid by credit card, contact them immediately and explain the situation.

Dandelionpicker · 11/02/2024 20:42

Thanks all. I can't find an email address but will call first thing tomorrow. Argh!!

Good luck getting through.

I booked with Tui once and then read a really bad review of the hotel we had booked. Phoned them and they cancelled the booking immediately and told me to re book with a different hotel. It was very easy. I think you have a certain number of days to do that.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 11/02/2024 20:51

I've just checked their terms and conditions and you can cancel within 14 days completely free of charge. That's exactly what they told me to do when I phoned and asked to swap to a different hotel. They said it was much easier to just cancel and rebook.

Dandelionpicker · 11/02/2024 20:54

Thanks - I'll update tomorrow to say how I get on.

I think there is a 24 hour cooling off period. ExDP booked a flight mistakenly, and was able to get a full refund the next day. This was only about a year ago. It was BA though not TUI.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 11/02/2024 21:49

Reminds me of the time I was coordinating with friends on a resort. I asked which resort and she said ‘Montego Bay’. So I booked the Montego Bay resort. What neither of us realized is that the company (not TUI) had 3 resorts in Mobay. Turns out she booked the ‘Royal Caribbean’ in Montego Bay. Only realized it when she mentioned getting a swim up room and I didn’t have that option. I called the next day and switched my reservation to the right resort.

I think most reputable resorts are pretty flexible with rearranging if they have the dates available. Just call first thing in the morning to talk to them.

I think you’ll be fine - I priced up a Tui holiday recently but couldn’t book until my sister had time off work confirmed. Next day she had the approval- and the price had gone up £1k! I went in to Tui shop and the agent said she couldn’t match the price and I would have been better to book and then cancel if needed.. so I think it must be possible

Laurama91 · 11/02/2024 21:54

Not stayed at this hotel but we stayed at riu yucatan in Mexico and loved it. We have stayed in a few riu hotels and always enjoyed ourselves

Aposterhasnoname · 11/02/2024 22:13

I’ve stayed at the Riu Cancun.

Cancel it!

PhoenixStarbeamer · 11/02/2024 22:29

I booked a holiday with jet2 and regretted it as realised it had awful reviews. Rang within 24 hours and they refunded me the full amount, no problem. Hopefully Tui are as easy.

Dandelionpicker · 12/02/2024 09:01

Got through to an incredibly helpful person on online chat this morning. All sorted to correct hotel and dates at no extra charge. Still no clue how I managed to balls up the booking so badly!
Thanks for your messages last night.
