AIBI about the prevalence of AI art?

I keep seeing pictures on social media of what is obviously AI art, and a whole load of people thinking it is real... and even arguing with people about it
One example I keep seeing is of some giant crocheted cats, and the so say " creator" sitting on the sofa with them.
The creator has the exact same expression in all pictures, and has 6 or 7 fingers on her hands in each picture.
But you still get a ton of comments about how amazing the lady is, where can they find her Insta, and how can they get her to make them a giant crochet cat.

If people can't even work out crochet cat lady is not real, do we have any hope when it comes to thing like AI generated images of people like politicians? There is AI speech now. Voters could be swayed by AI, and that is worrying.

AI is sooo scary, especially with people constantly indulging in these AI filters on tik tok. I'm convinced there is more to it constantly scanning our faces than just to provide people with a fun filter but I never say this in real life as people think it sounds a bit daft. It's true though, people so mindlessly have let AI in and it's terrifying. It'll only get worse.

The way people think they are real just shows how many lack any ability for critical thanking... no wonder online scams are so widespread now.

I saw an AI generated image of a cat and kitten looking soaking wet and abandoned on a beach and 95% of the comments were people upset and saying "how cruel, you should have rescued them", "help them", "help and don't just take a photo" etc. It was so obvious the image wasn't even real ffs 🙄

That is the one! I have seen loads of examples of her "crochet work". She does not exist, and neither do the cats.

I can't say i have noticed any but will become more aware now!

Ive never seen the crochet cat before

There is an issue with it with propaganda. There was an explosion of AI pics around the Palestine conflict month or so ago. People just don't use common sense when looking at these.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 12/02/2024 07:14

I'm not into cats but I see a lot of the dog equivalents - Newfoundlands gambolling in the snow with their ten puppies etc etc.

I think AI is going to be the thing that leads to some regulation of the internet.

FknOmniShambles · 12/02/2024 07:17

The possibilities with AI are terrifying. There were some horrible sexual images of Taylor Swift on X recently. The possibilities for sick fantasists are endless.
Have you seen this site? Fascinating to see what AI generates faces can look like https://this-person-does-not-exist.com/en

Yesterday i saw one of a small baby and a puppy together bathing in a tub (who would do such a thing!) and loads of comments about how cute they were. You could easily see flaws in it: the bottom part of the tub wasn’t big enough to fit them into. I cant believe people really fall into this…. It really is dangerous.

The death of truth happened slowly, right before your eyes.

Photo shop made photos reflect what someone wanted others to see.
Photo filters right in the phone showed the world a lie.
Social media portrayals of dishonest lives promoted as truth

AI is a natural progression. And for those without critical thinking skills, they'll seal clap along and accept what they're told to accept.

Welcome to modern life.

LifeofBrienne · 12/02/2024 07:37

I left an animal photos Facebook group quite rapidly because of the AI pics - more specifically because each would have about a hundred comments beneath going ‘aw how beautiful’, ‘isn’t nature wonderful!’

Why yes, nature is wonderful, but what you’re looking it is an obvious AI / photoshopped freak. Owls don’t come in bright colours, and even baby owls are more than 1cm tall. Aargh!

NewYearNewCalendar · 12/02/2024 07:43

The way people think they are real just shows how many lack any ability for critical thanking... no wonder online scams are so widespread now.

I agree, total lack of critical thinking skills, and plenty of people around willing to exploit that. Have critical thinking skills got worse? Or is it just more obvious when they’re online.

The other factor, of course, is how many of those comments are bots. A lot of the pages that share lots of AI images also have bots to comment - drives up engagement, so the algorithm pushes the page to more real people.

I have ditched a few of the interior design / decor accountsI used to follow on Instagram because of this. Pictures of spectacular rooms which are very obviously not real.

RaininSummer · 12/02/2024 07:53

It's horrible. On Facebook I am constantly assaulted by images of tubby little babies dressed like vegetable armies or even worse crying whilst being attacked by insects.

Sparklfairy · 12/02/2024 08:06

Meta announced last week that they'll be tagging AI art on FB and Insta so people know.

EveSix · 12/02/2024 17:14

That's a relief, Sparkl.
I saw a post attributed to a cold weather swimming group near my home town in northern Scandinavia, depicting about 100 people in swimsuits and trunks leisurely sitting in a large icehole on a lake, chatting and relaxing, no sauna or warm clothing in sight. People were commenting on how cosy it looked and how they'd love to try this ancient local custom of community ice-bathing. Infuriating! That far north it would never be possible ‐it would be lethal in a matter of moments. Yet I do see this in connection with AI quite a bit: some amazing image and then some wild, romantic claims concerning the culture out of which the image is said to have originated, distastefully fetishising and extrapolating upon cultural expressions and customs, bleating on about 'majestic', 'ancient', 'wise', 'ancestoral', 'time-honoured', 'traditional', etc. People lap it up.

EveSix · 27/03/2024 00:50

Back to moan about this dumb shit.
Seems lots of AI content is appearing in my feed in the last couple of weeks even though I haven't engaged with anything like it: interiors, mainly: "Off-Grid Living" type stuff showing endless Hobbit holes with sumptuous textiles, adobe/cobb features and organic shapes in wood and metalwork, nestled in exquisite surroundings. No offense to my van-dwelling or otherwise off-grid living friends, but their homes are primarily ingeniously functional and practical ‐not polished showhomes. Yet hundreds of people post in the comments, asking whether the blacksmith takes commissions in the north east, where they can order the cushions and announcing they too are buying a plot of land with an old pigsty on it for the purpose of conversion. Give me strength.
I'm a member of a couple of FB pages for a pretty niche artisanal craft I practise, and even there, new 'members' are occasionally admitted, only to post obvious AI images of their 'work', creations which are simply impossible within the limitations of the materials used (think a dolls' house out of blown glass -it would be i m p o s s i b l e). Luckily, they get short shrift.
If I was found to have engaged with or 'liked' AI content, I'd be so damned embarrassed.

ThrillhouseVanHouten · 27/03/2024 00:56

Part of my job requires working with AI images. It’s getting really easy to make some very convincing stuff. There’s no hope for the boomers on Facebook. 😂
