To have never heard of Swim leggings and don't know how to wear them correctly

I recently saw someone mention Swim leggings. They're something I've wanted for a long time but didn't know there was such a thing.
Can I wear them over or under a swimsuit or do you have to wear with a different Swim top? How do you mumsnetters wear yours?

I wear them instead of tankini bottoms. Sometimes I wear a tankini top with them, sometimes a rash vest. Depends how much I want/need to cover up. With most rash vests I wear a bikini top, but my maximum-coverage rash vest has a built-in boob shelf,so I don't need a bikini top under that one.

They are very comfortable and I don't see myself ever going back to bikini bottoms or swimsuits.

My DD wears hers with a tankini/rash vest top. I have seen people wearing them over a swimsuit.

I feel like over a swimsuit would mean I don't have worry of my middle flashing to anyone. I just don't want to look silly. Also do you wear them to the pool or just outside? I have been a bit of a yoyo dieter and have saggy upper thighs 😢

I wear them over a swim suit. Have occasionally worn a normal t shirt or wetsuit type long sleeved top over the swim suit, but not always. I basically wear them as an in-between option when swimming outdoors when it's too cold to just go in a swimsuit, but more often when I'm paddleboarding or doing one of those water assault courses or something. I find wetsuits really constricting so they are an alternative when you want to wear something a little more covering than just a swim suit. Obviously they don't keep you as warm as a proper wetsuit though, although you can get thermal ones, but I got mine for like £7 from lidl.

You won't look silly. Lots of people swim in leggings.

I wear as few layers as possible. Layers get hot outside the pool, and multiple layers of wet lycra can be uncomfortable. When I come out of the pool and don't intend to return for a while, for lunch, say, I tend to put a loose coverup on and remove the rash vest. Otherwise, I keep it all on.

And if you're talking about doing a few lengths in your local pool, yes, I wear leggings for that, too.

I love mine. I tend to only wear them in the sea. I hate wetsuits and really struggle to find any that fit so on holiday in the summer I’ll wear swim leggings and a long-sleeve rash vest instead. I wear a swimming costume underneath, just in case an errant wave dragged the leggings down!

Dazzylazzy · 11/02/2024 16:50

I have some but they’re quite thin so need a costume under or over them. I have them for wild swimming rather than a wetsuit but also for really sunny days so I don’t need so much sun cream.

My beautiful sister wears them over a swimsuit (in the swimming pool). She has varicose veins which she is very conscious of. Her leggings are black and she wears them over a variety of different coloured cossies- looks really good with a low or racer back. I think she looks very cool.

I got mine from amazon they are 3/4 length and I wear a shoer sleeve rash top. If I didn't hate my arms I'd wear a swimming costume cos I have to tuck the top in when I'm swimming.

So if I were you just wear them over your costume

birdling · 12/02/2024 09:58

I wear them so I don't have to shave my legs 😂

BlibBlabBlob · 12/02/2024 10:12

I love mine, got them from Amazon. I wear them with a rash vest, with an old bra underneath for support. Don't own a proper swimming costume anymore, I always felt so self-conscious in those. I'm comfortable in my own skin despite having plenty of wobbly bits but I'm just not a person who likes having much on show. Don't wear low necklines or short skirts/shorts unless I have leggings underneath, so why would I want my boobs and bum on show when swimming?

The added bonus is that I can get into my swimwear at home, drive or catch the bus to the pool wearing it (putting coat over the top in colder weather and trainers on my feet), then pretty much get straight in the pool when I arrive. The only thing I have to worry about is being super careful to remember to put all of my clothes including underwear into my swim bag before I leave, otherwise I'd be having a very soggy journey home in my swimwear!

Rash vests do float up and show your belly underwater by the way, so you might prefer to put swim leggings over the top of a normal costume for this reason. Personally I deal with it by tucking the rash vest into the leggings after I get into the water. (It looks odd tucked in, which is why I don't just dress with it tucked in to start with.)

I haven't bought any for me - but for kids/teens but they wear them with tankini/rash vest top - from amazon - stops DS backs of legs getting burnt - which despite liberal and frequent sunscreen application happened.

I've seen them at pools here - usually teens young women again. DD is using short ones with tankini at minute for school swimming which has been acceptable.

I do think next time we do a beach holiday I will invest in a pair.

Thanks all. Seems like I won't look out of place in some leggings. I will give them a go!
