Leave 12 & 7 year old in house whilst I run round the block

I’m running a half marathon in 8 weeks. I’m trying to train but it’s difficult to get time. Would I be unreasonable to run round the block possibly 6 times to get some practice in.

Oh please 🙄 this is why we have kids who can’t wipe their own arses if you think a 12 can’t cope for 20 mins in the house with a 7 year old.

i bet those are saying it’s too young don’t let your kids out to play on their own or with friends
really sad sign of the times.

its perfectly fine. They have a phone, it’s a quick run

Yes, WTF! Unless there are additional needs not mentioned or they live literally in the middle of nowhere with no neighbours I’d worry about a 12 year old who wasn’t capable of looking after a 7 year old in their own home for an hour.

Well I used to babysit other people's kids at 13 so I think the ages are fine. Their sibling relationship is the more important factor. If you think they can be trusted then I'm sure you're right.

Our parents used to go out for dinner leaving my DB and me at home when we were 12 and 10, and that was long before mobile phones, they just left the number for the restaurant with us.

12 and 7, I think I would, for a few minutes, if I thought my older DC was sensible and trustworthy. Of course I'd take a mobile phone with me.

Had to edit this as I originally misread the ages as 12 and 17, was thinking wtf is the OP even asking this! 😅

No, not 17. Read it again.

My 12 year old does ad hoc babysitting for the neighbours kids (aged 7-10), an hour here and there. Why couldn't a 12yo be left with their 7yp sibling for an hour?

Greengagesnfennel · 11/02/2024 11:08

If they are both sensible and you check in regularly I think it's ok.
Have you tried taking the 7 yo on a bike with you? That way you can get a bit more mileage in as 12 to is probably fine on their own for a bit longer.
