AIBU to think my breathing is not normal

I am overweight. Exactly 20kg over what would make fall back into the bracket of a healthy bmi. Currently I'm in the obese category. I hardly exercise and yes I'm not eating great but believe me when I say I want this to change.

Can someone please advise me are these considered "normal" when being overweight or could there be an underlying issue?

• easily out of breath
• I sweat very quickly even if I'm just walking. I'm very quickly hot and tired and struggling to keep a normal breath.
• my legs hurt when I do walk
• I'm always really hot and even more so when it comes to the time of the month.

I'd appreciate any advice. Doctors always tell me to just lose weight. I'm 32 years old.

It could just be due to weight, they are known related issues I’m afraid.

Other obesity-related problemsLiving with obesity can cause a number of further problems, including difficulties with daily activities and serious health conditions.
Day-to-day problems related to obesity include:

  • breathlessness
  • increased sweating
  • snoring
  • difficulty doing physical activity
  • often feeling very tired
  • joint and back pain
  • low confidence and self-esteem
  • feeling isolated
The psychological problems associated with living with obesity can also affect your relationships with family and friends, and may lead to depression.

Thank you. This is helpful. I know what I need to do

Obviously loosing weight will help you in the long run but please don’t let the medical professionals fob you off if you are constantly feeling out of breath. I did for years until I was hospitalised and diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension. I just thought I was unfit and getting old but now I’m on the right medication I can do so much more.

Yes does sound weight related but mostly fitness if you see what I mean. I'm obese but though I haven't lost much weight, I have got fitter recently since taking up horse riding.

I notice that I can do more laps in trot than I could to start with and I'm less puffed out.

My muscles hurt less the more I do it. If I skip a week or do something new I feel it the next day. I started cantering a few weeks ago and spent two days walking like I'd shit myself because my thighs hurt. Now I'm doing it every week I don't hurt at all. Diet helps but exercise is the key.

Everything you describe is a side effect of obesity.

But that doesn't necessarily mean that all your symptoms are caused by your weight. Go and see a GP if you're concerned it could be something more serious.
