The Body Shop

Reading the news today, the body shop was bought recently. They’ve just announced that it’s gone into administration.

What the hell, is this a tax dodge, asset stripping or something else?

every company has to do it’s due diligence, the financial position would have been very clear, banks would have to sign off on it.

It just sounds so dodgy, can anyone enlighten me on why they would have done this so soon after buying it

I think that it's just the UK bit in administration.
Apparently they recently took over Lloyds pharmacy - also folded

Possibly doing a pre pack - ditch any losses and possibly staff obligations?

A pain - I'd just found a cleanser from them that I like.

Its been going down the pan for a while, many women who had been loyal customers boycotted after their attack on JKR. They also seemed confused as to what a woman was which was odd given they are their main customer base!

10ThousandSpoons · 10/02/2024 12:03

I'm convinced our local store is a front for money laundering. No one EVER goes in it

TiredCatLady · 10/02/2024 12:04

It stinks of asset stripping but then Body Shop has been on its backside for a while - products are just too expensive given the quality. And like a PP says, there never seems to be anyone in there shopping.

Even before that (the JKR thing), the ones around me were rarely busy from what I recall unless it was around Christmas and maybe Valentine’s Day, but that’s it.

Containerhome · 10/02/2024 12:15

I'm sure BHS did the same? All online now

fiskoo · 10/02/2024 12:17

They attacked jkr so I have absolutely no sympathy for the company owners
(Although sorry for the staff)

Outside their weird political positioning I think they've lost their way for a while now

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 10/02/2024 12:17

Quality down. Prices up. Recipes changed of old favourites making allergies flare. Stopped using the stuff when I used to have all bath, face, body and makeup from there.

Kalevala · 10/02/2024 12:18

I boycotted over JKR and I think many other women would have too.

KohlaParasaurus · 10/02/2024 12:23

Lost its way a long time ago as far as I'm concerned, well before the MLM and sticking its nose into gender politics.

scorpiogirly · 10/02/2024 12:24

Good. I didn't agree with their views and didn't rate their products. Always seemed really synthetic to me.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 10/02/2024 12:24

I wonder if they own some of the shop premises. These would be worth a lot.

Spencer0220 · 10/02/2024 12:28

So are they completely folding?

Can't say I'm at all surprised. I stopped buying when they went all vegan to the detriment of some of their products.

PicklesAndTequila · 10/02/2024 12:30

I boycotted when they attacked JKR.

TheKeatingFive · 10/02/2024 12:33

Shame, I always liked their products. But they brought this on themselves. 🤷‍♀️

thursdaygrumbles · 10/02/2024 12:34

But surely that’s the point, the management who were woke and spoke out against JKR, they got paid off by the new owners very recently who then put it into administration. So without knowing the financial deal, it seems the previous owners have got off Scott free???

I'd be sad to see them go, but really only from a nostalgic pov.
When they first opened they were good - reasonable quality at a reasonable price. I remember going in and testing out the scents at the perfume bar - perfume oils decanted from huge bottles. Plastic bottles just cost whatever the quantity of perfume cost, or you could treat yourself to a glass bottle which could be refilled. I wore a body shop scent on my wedding day. Over the years, the quality has reduced and the prices have increased - nowadays I buy very little in there, even the outlet stores are expensive. I still wear White Musk perfume, but even that has changed now it has gone vegan and it won't be on my Christmas list in future. Sad.

UltraWoman · 10/02/2024 12:38

The blue haired arsehole behind that stupid tweet to JKR has a lot to answer for!

But… the Body Shop lost its way long ago, I’m not mourning the loss of it now.

treeinthedistance · 10/02/2024 12:45

I do like some of the products, but they are very expensive - as are Lush, I just can't justify spending those prices on shower gel.

vincettenoir · 10/02/2024 12:50

They do have some nice things I'll miss. Hopefully I'll clean up in the clearance sale. A shame to lose them (however misjudged some of them marketing has been).

cancandt123 · 10/02/2024 12:55

I used to love it. But I hate mlms with a passion so can't support a business that has one. Such a shame I used to love their face serums

HoneyButterPopcorn · 10/02/2024 12:58

The staff used to be lovely and helpful (one gave me a load of freebies and sampled when he was commiserating with me because I’d have a bloody awful day and we got chatting). Lately it just because a preach fest with over eager sales people (like lush with less blue hair and nose rings).

Lush to go next. weren't they originally Cosmetics To Go (which I also loved as a teen?) but went bust?

Ihaterhymingrabbit · 10/02/2024 13:04

I found they didn’t switch up their product scents enough, very boring product lines and the shower gel weren’t much better than cheap Bayliss and Harding and much more expensive.

CranfordScones · 10/02/2024 13:07

Surely this is evidence that the JKR boycott worked.
