To think it's weird to have a UTI without "urgency"?

Ever since yesterday evening I've had a sharp pain and discomfort during and after urinating. I'm guessing this is a UTI and currently waiting for a GP appointment, but I've had one in the past and I always got the feeling I really needed to pee, even though nothing would actually happen happen I went.

This time, I'm not getting that urgency symptom at all. It's just the stinging and post-pee discomfort. Anyone had this?

the urge may come later as the infection gets worse 😣

I had a UTI for weeks and didn't realise be cause I didn't have the urgency. I just gradually felt more and more unwell and had a low grade pain in my lower abdomen. Apparently its not all that unusual

It depends on the infection in my experience. Stinging and pain always, urge sometimes. Dull ache in the belly.

Recent changes mean pharmacists can give you a 3 day prescription of antibiotics for a simple UTI (no blood, no temperature, no kidney pain) without seeing the GP. Last time I went they did say you have to have had symptoms for 48 first though.

Drink LOADS of water.

Sorry you’re unwell. A non urgent UTI is one of the 7 services pharmacies across the nation are now able to diagnose and prescribe antibiotics for, so might be worth a chat with your pharmacist. I work in a pharmacy where this service was rolled out last Wednesday and we’ve treated a few so far. Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks everyone. So I saw a GP privately and he have me those 3-day antibiotics and said it should fix it. He also said if it doesn't, then it could be chlamydia and I should go back?! This seems unlikely as I've been sleeping with just one person for the past few months and we always use condoms without fail. But now I'm panicking. We're not exclusive or anything. Oh dear.

Chlamydia can be symptonless for years. IF you have it, you may have caught it from an ex.

BobbyBiscuits · 10/02/2024 12:26

Take the antibiotics. When he says it 'could' be chlamydia, you need to be tested for that ASAP as it could be both. Yeah, it can be there for ages before you notice, but if it is that then tell your partner. I bet he already knows.

It's good that this is now a pharmacy service but I don't fancy 48 hours of symptoms, also
3 days antibiotics never work for me!

Psm92 · 10/02/2024 23:28

Thanks everyone. So I've now taken 2 doses of the antibiotic (something with an N) and the stinging during peeing is less...but my urethra feels really weird and inflamed after? Anyone had this?

I’m a veteran of UTIs sadly, and I can tell you that the symptoms can vary. I’ve had ones with serious urgency, ones where the pee is cloudy, ones where I’ve had backache and ones where I’ve had pain down both flanks. All sorted by antibiotics (Nitrofurantoin), generally resolving symptoms a couple of days in. What you’re feeling is the inflammation gradually shrinking towards the infection site (like it does with a boil or insect bite when you start to recover) and over the next day or two your urethra will feel less painful too.

BTW I was always advised to drink normal amounts of fluids while on Nitro. Apparently if you drink gallons it dilutes the action of the antibiotics.

For prevention I can recommend a D-Mannose/cranberry extract supplement (high strength).

BertieBotts · 10/02/2024 23:50

I don't get the standard UTI symptoms. I can't remember now what I get as I haven't had one for ages, but I recognise it straight away when I have one.

I don't think it's that unusual. Bodies are all different after all.

If there is something else which the GP recommends getting tested for it can't hurt.

TigerJoy · 11/02/2024 01:01

I don't get urgency with UTIs anymore. Could well be one.

Did GP do dipstick?

Go to GP on Monday if symptoms haven't cleared up and request that a urine sample is cultured. Regardless if symptoms haven't cleared up and it is a UTI you'll need a longer course of antibiotics, or possibly other antibiotics.

Never in my life of multiple UTIs often with non typical symptoms has anyone suggested chlamydia.
