Is this a normal occurrence with your baby in nursery? Starting to get concerned

DD goes to a nursery rating outstanding (I know that doesn’t necessarily mean much) and generally had a good reputation in the area, although it is reasonably remote so not loads of places to choose from. She’s been there three months since she was one, only in 3 days a week. There’s been a total of 6 ‘incidents’ since she started. Shes not even walking yet. These incidents have been bumped head walking into large wall fixed mirror, bumping heads with another child, trapping finger in toy, falling when leaning towards key worker who was with another child and then biting her tongue as she fell apparently, leading to blood all over shirt. The latest a couple of weeks ago was bumping side to head near the eye and when I asked how I was given a really strange reply which personally didn’t make sense to me, saying she tripped and fell against the wooden chair...though I know sometimes you have to be there to understand how it’s happened.

I have not enjoyed leaving her there because I have terrible anxiety, BUT they have always been reassuring and she’s always smiling when I pick her up and smiles when we go in and she sees the staff, so usually I am reassured. They do painting etc or as much as a small toddler can and they let me know about the day in detail at pick up.

Just wondering if there incidents are common? Usual number and thing to expect? She never ‘trips’ etc at home!

I'm a SAHM, my kid falls all the time often ends up with a fat lip. Both his front teeth are chipped. I'm always with him and watching him, so I'm assuming these things happen (and they aren't 1:1). Kids fall! I think as long as they are minor accidents, it's inevitable, but I totally understand your concern!

It seems normal to me, and they are logging "accidents" that don't have an injury so I would say they are being thorough. My daughter broke 2 bones at nursery along with bumped heads, grazes etc. ..... all of them were genuine accidents and I never had any worries about the nursery.

She's cruising and it will happen. There's no visible marks. I guess they are over reporting tbh I wouldn't have thought all those incidents needed am accident form but at least they are being very honest

It’s very ok for you to say “it seems like there have been a lot of incidents in a short space of time” and they should respond appropriately.

TBH, a nursery is obliged to report the tiniest little bump. Something you'd just completely brush off with a "whoopsie!" and a quick passing rub if it had happened at home.
I personally think, if they're going in happy, and coming out happy, then all is well.

When my little one was cruising, he was always having falls and bumps. Perhaps nursery are just being overcautious and mentioning every tiny little thing?

Marblessolveeverything · 10/02/2024 11:32

So she is cruising and no visible marks. I would consider that as possibly being in the typical range. Most wobblers are a little over ambitious in their skills and can take a little longer to learn to plonk themselves back on their bum to stop .

As pp said documenting versus living the reality probably looks worse. If you consciously noted the bumps etc at home and add in a group of other wobblers I imagine it may be an eye opener.

In saying that I would ask if there is anything that could be done to reduce bumps. I know our childcare had plastic chairs versus wood, but then these may not be as secure

If she's cruising and learning to walk I would expect a fair few bumps! DC2 started at nursery just as he started cruising round the furniture and I had to sign an accident report form the very first day 🙈 as he had pulled himself up to standing on something and then slipped and his forehead got bumped. Could have happened at home just as easily.

Hasn't been anything for a few months now but I do remember with my eldest at the same nursery the accident report forms would come in fits and spurts. Nothing for weeks and then multiple in one week for whatever reason.

Most of them haven't even left a mark and I wouldn't have noticed anything if they hadn't told me. They are just marking sure they have all bases covered by doing paperwork well.

She is cruising a lot yes. She can stand on her own for a few seconds too.

no visible marks from anything that’s happened. Just seems like it’s always happening, they don’t seem understaffed either. Not sure what to do.

If there are no visible marks, i would think they are being very, very transparent with any trips and falls. I would expect trips and falls when learning to walk. I would think your child is not coming to any real harm if no marks left, it would be different if they were coming out with constant visual head bumps and marks.

Im not sure i would be "doing" anything in this situation.
