Have been craving a larder for years. We never use our utility sink. Would it impact house price if we ripped it out?

Where do you empty the dirty water from mopping your kitchen floor if not the utility room sink?

minipie · 10/02/2024 07:55

I have folding laundry baskets like this for clean laundry- they are a godsend as they fit (squashed flat) down the side of the stacked washer and dryer.

For dirty laundry we have bigger baskets which live upstairs

@TheChosenTwo that sounds fab, mind sharing a pic? We're making ours bigger and I'm looking for ideas. Thanks

Headlightshome · 10/02/2024 07:58

do you have space to put shelves on the wall or use free standing shelves?
I used Ikea free standing shelves to make a wall in my utility a pantry area.

Papillon23 · 10/02/2024 07:59

Gosh I definitely wouldn't get rid of a sink in the utility room - can you not just cover it over as people have suggested?

I don't have a utility room and I find the lack of it incredibly annoying: nowhere to wash out paint trays or soak clothes with vanish, or hand wash them or deal with shoes that need scrubbing. It would definitely impact on my likelihood of buying a house.

Helenahatstand · 10/02/2024 08:01

We use ours loads, especially the sink cleaning dirty things I'd not want in the kitchen sink, soaking clothes etc but of you don't use your you should make it suit your needs. We keep a lot of food in our utility cupboards which I find very useful. I suppose it all depends on how big it is - ours is big enough for appliances, a sink, keeping kids' crafting crap and plenty of food storage. If you only have limited space, use it as will suit you best. How much food storage space are you imagining? And how much storage do you lack in your kitchen?

Superlambaanana · 10/02/2024 08:03

Have you got a space near your bedrooms which could be converted into a utility cupboard? I have this and its great - washing machine and tumbler are stacked in what used to be a built in wardrobe.

So my kitchen is dirty-clothes-free. As 90% of washing comes from bedrooms and I tumble or radiator dry most things, it contains it all in one area rather than carting up and down to kitchen/ utility for no reason!

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 08:04

I do use a laundry basket but only for putting out washing, I don't do ironing generally so ironing board is upstairs in box/storage room down side of wardrobe for special occasions. Empty laundry basket though is kept in small room between utility and toilet where boots and coats are. Our utility is like a walk through between kitchen and back door so only really houses tidy things like the washing machine and dryer and some cupboards, the untidy stuff goes in this Tardis next door. I had thought of getting a white Pax wardrobe with sliding doors for this little room to hide everything away but DH grunted at that, probably because he would have to make it.

Arggggh you’ve all got me thinking now. Floor water down the loo which is in cloakroom in same area. Have honestly used the sink only to wash out paint brushes in the 15 years we’ve been here however where would we do that without one- not in the nice new Belfast sink I’ve got my eye on!

Loving the folding laundry baskets!!!!!

Down the drain which is just outside of the back door.
No utility room sink here but I still wouldn't be without the utility room itself.
In there is the washer, tumble dryer, fridge freezer, microwave, Instant Pot, air fryer, bread maker, cat food, booze fridge and ironing board, not to mention cupboards full of husband's tools and other random crap. F knows where we'd put all that without one!

I am thinking of maybe clearing out under stairs cupboard to utilise somehow but then the kitchen is creeping out and if we’re paying ££( admittedly not a fortune) want kitchen to work.

Have never done this before. Was expecting a little advice from Howdsns but didn’t get much and the young guy who will be giving us some computer ideas will not have the life experience yet of wrestling with children/ teens, doing laundry for a family and feeding it. We cook a lot. The 100s of spice jars falling out of one cupboard that I have to find what I need is a higher priority than a sink I rarely use but can see the advantages of having one.😫

We wash our paint brushes in the toilet sink but it's not a posh cloakroom toilet as its at the back of the house, next to where the muddy boots are kept

Lulaloo · 10/02/2024 08:14

We had a larder put in a corner of our kitchen. It is double doors and a fab use of dead space, it’s huge and we love it.

08557lemon555 · 10/02/2024 08:14

We have an outdoor tap so co I’ll ld potentially use that for brushes.

You could probably make the understairs cupboard into a nice larder area and put spice racks on the wall in there. There are lots of ideas online for this

Are you having a tall cupboard? Is so this sort of shelving on the door looks handy for spices.

Not necessarily what we’re looking for but look at the spice racks on that!!! 😍

I’ve always had a larder fixation. No idea why. My grandma had a whole cold larder room.

Our utility is off back door it's got a washing machine, dryer and a the fridge freezer. A massive cupboards for coats and shoes (not not enough room) I put a kitchen cupboard on the wall where I keep football bits and random shite. There's an also a small Cloakroom with a loo and little sink I can't have it messy though cos it's main entrance. We never use the front. Drives me nuts if it's scruffy.

I couldn't be without it, god knows where all those shoes and coats would go

08557lemon555 · 10/02/2024 08:22

So now I’m falling down a Pinterest under stairs pantry rabbit hole.

A utility room is a must for me. We only had a small one at our old house and regretted it.
I hate washing drying around the house so it must have sufficient room for airers as well as washing machine, dryer and spare freezer.
We haven't refurbished ours yet but it's around 3.8m square although it will be a utility and boot room

However, set the house up for you. The only thing I would recommend is to keep a water supply available so a new owner can easily change it to a utility room

JaninaDuszejko · 10/02/2024 08:28

How do you move your washing about if not in some kind of basket? That said I'm currently using the big blue IKEA bags because we seem to have masses of them but have used the folding ones before until I broken them and before that had a traditional plasticky one that I got with my first washing bachine (and that lasted longer than the washing machine!).

I use our utility sink all the time. For handwashing bras and woollens, rinsing out period pants (3 females in the house), cleaning football boots, washing up inside plant pots, washing paint brushes, emptying out buckets after mopping floor. Basically any and everything that is not food related (which is done in the kitchen sink). I think keep the utility sink and make the hall cupboard a pantry.

crumpet · 10/02/2024 08:30

I love the big sink in my utility. Was great for filthy sportswear and trainers/football boots, any hand washing clothes, useful for when workmen were in or diy jobs. All of these save using the kitchen sink, and splashing mud etc around in the kitchen. (It’s also used to pile things up before putting in the washing machine, but we’ll say less about that!)

crumpet · 10/02/2024 08:30

No back door in my utility

BobnLen · 10/02/2024 08:32

What is in the understairs cupboard at the moment, is it maybe stuff that can be relocated in the utility room
