I've been suffering with headaches, dizziness, nausea and other strange symptoms for a month or so now. I haven't got very far with the doctors other than suggestion various painkillers.

I've noticed I can have this done in my nearest city

www.vista-health.co.uk/

It's £365 for a head mri which I can pay in 3 parts and have done next week.

Is it worth having done? What do you think?

Wow! You read my mind. I’m thinking the exact same thing and I’ve had a look at your link. I’ve got something pressing on the back of my neck that is pinching the facial nerve and the pain shoots up my face and scalp. Docs just give pain med or tell me to get a massage but I’m worried and I want to rule out a thyroid growth and I’m having trouble swallowing and I choke sometimes . I’m on Levothyroxine as I have hashimotos.
So I’d say yes if you can afford it.
I was wondering last night how much a private scan would be and now I know so being able to pay over three months is a big help for me. So thank you for your post.
Do it if it puts your mind at rest.

@liverpoolgal82 you're very welcome! Yes it's £365 and paying over 3 lots of £120 is quite affordable really, I mean you can't put a price on reassurance. I did look at a full body scan just out of curiosity but they are £1500 so decided against that!! My closest is Hull but I'm sure there will be plenty near you, I think there are a few Pall Mall medical places near Liverpool too that offer scans x

I think it depends on what is being looked for - some scans are better at finding one sort of thing than another.

I had a private MRI on my spine, but we knew we were looking for a disc prolapse and an MRI was appropriate.

uselessmummy123 · 09/02/2024 13:55

@Mischance I guess I want to rule out anything sinister like a brain tumour. I know I have a cyst on the pineal gland in my brain but I was discharged from the NHS as it hadn't grown and they said it was an incidental finding. But that was 10 years ago so I'm concerned in case that might've grown and could be what is causing my symptoms x

I'd do it, well, I did do it with a slight change that I attached it to an appointment with a specialist (just looked up specialists for my injury in my area) and he checked me over, ordered the private MRI scan then saw me again with the scan results - I think the whole thing was about £500 and it was definitely worth it as I knew then exactly what was wrong and how to go forwards.

Does this include reporting of the imaging? Also, who are you going to follow it up with once this has been done. Seems very cheap if it does. Having had private imaging done previously I had to pay for it to be reported and then pay for a consultation with a neurologist.

uselessmummy123 · 09/02/2024 14:26

It includes a report sent to you phone within 3 days but it's an extra £50 to speak to someone about it if anything comes up, but the images are sent to your NHS doctor x

That's so cheap when I've had back MRIs on my insurance it was over £1200. Are there any reviews of the service?

LIZS · 09/02/2024 14:41

Is there a full report sent to gp? Otherwise I think you also need a consultant radiologist to interpret results.
