Sloppy seconds.................

I can't give too much detail on this as it would be outing. But in a nutshell, would you apply for a job the second time round if you lost out first time round to someone who had no experience in the field? The person they did go with has decided he doesn't want to continue in the role and would like to return to his previous role within the firm. We were both internal candidates. This is just less than 6 months into the job, and he was really happy to move across to us from his previous role, which he found stressful so he must be pretty unhappy.

He's found that he's not getting the support or guidance from his management that he needs in the role; there's also the possibility that the role isn't what he thought it would be - and he's now wanting to go back to what he was doing previously - looks like the vacancy will come round again. But would I be a fool to give it a second attempt? I too, am slightly worried that the support in that job may not be there..........that's a slight aside as they didn't choose me in any case first time round. No-one has mentioned it too me either - but it's only just happened so I'm assuming the news will "break" soon.

Thoughts?

Wouldn’t hesitate if it was advantageous to me
he could of literally come across better at interview
the fact you never got it in the first place doesn’t mean your shit just means someone was better

possibly have a chat with the guy stepping down you could of also dodged a bullet

Go for it, op. Didn’t do Rishi Sunak any harm.

(Sloppy seconds means having sex with a woman who’s just had sex with another man- just in case you felt the urge to use the expression in your interview 😂)

Did you get feedback after the last competition? Was it interview performance or gap in criteria?

In my experience being an internal candidate can be daunting as they know you and I feel we don't always sell our selves as well.

I would query the support do you think you could do without? I think that is a bigger influence.

I had to go twice for department lead and it was a little daunting but got there second time. When I look back now I know I didn't interview as well on the first occasion.

I'd want to establish whether I was likely to enjoy it more than he did - do you think you would get more support? Or not need as much? Do you have the resilience to cope with a job being difficult and unpleasant if it helps you to get where you want? I wouldn't but for other people it might work.

I'd expect them to make a point of letting you know about the vacancy if you were second in line. But the fact he didn't like his previous role but would rather go back to it than continue this one... I'd be wary!
