to expect my landlord to fix the this?

Generally my landlord is decent. When my boiler died he had a new one fitted within a few days. He gets back to me quickly, doesn't increase rent, does all the relevant checks. Etc. I just have one issue he doesn't seem to want to fix (I suspect because it's very expensive!). Whenever it rains, light drips through my light fitting. Water is clearly dripping in through the roof. The neighbours have had their roof done recently and the roofers commented to them how awful my roof is. The first time I reported it he got someone to look at the light and apparently they said it looked fine/not dangerous. There is a small entrance into the loft but I haven't looked in it because I don't have a ladder. I'm borrowing one tomorrow as I'm fed up with it. I already know I'm going to find a puddle of water. It's really hard because I just feel like if he has to fix it my rent will just skyrocket, but seriously, water dripping through a light fitting can't be safe can it?

Water in a light fixture poses a very serious risk of shock/electrocution and fire. You could be shocked when using the switch. This has to be remedied immediately.

It is a pull string light in the upstairs bathroom but I just tie it up so my son can't reach it when it rains because it can't be safe.

Leaking roofs can be a nightmare to fix and a new roof is expensive.

I'm a home owner and when it rains heavily mine leaks. I've had someone look at it but it's impossible to work out where the water is getting in!

I have a BIG tray in the loft to catch the drips!

The roofers who were on my neighbours roof said the felt had completely deteriorated.

It will be an expensive thing to sort but the landlord has to do this.
Having been a landlord you have to look after things you might just let go as a homeowner.
You can't have water running down a light switch due to safety issues.

Ours dripped for a few hours - then the whole ceiling came down! Beware

I have a big tray, a loft and a leaky roof...

I now need to get them all together!

There will be much swearing!

Report him to environmental health at your local council. They can take enforcement action.

Remind him he's invested £££££ in your property and to protect his investment he needs to do maintenence and repairs. He may invalidate his buildings insurance if he doesn't keep the structure watertight.

I'm too scared to do anything like this because I might ruin my relationship with him and he might increase my rent/force me out somehow.

But at least you had someone come and look. I've just had the light fitting looked at which makes no sense at all.

If he is not bothered that his roof is on the brink of collapse I'd say that is slumlord territory. This is inexcusable. You can report him to the environmental health and the council if he refuses to fix a leaking roof causing potential severe electrical hazard/ fatality. Contact Shelter maybe as well? You can't be expected to live there.
