Parents talking non-stop and allowing younger siblings to shout and be annoying

My son does an after school activity at the leisure centre. The activity takes place in a sports hall, all the parents sit in the cafe next door and look through the viewing windows.

Aibu to think everyone should try and be respectful of everyone else and not talk at the top of our voices, try and keep younger siblings behaviour sensible and not encroach on other people's space?

Honestly it makes me so cross.

Today I had to endure someone else's inane conversation which took place while their younger child repeatedly bashed on the window shouting to get their sister's attention.

As you can tell, I'm now over-stimulated and grumpy!

Get some earbuds

Alwaysalwayscold · 08/02/2024 17:57

What do you want them to do, sit and watch in silence? YABU

Bladwdoda · 08/02/2024 17:58

I would find it annoying too, but honestly just sounds like people acting normally.

I wear head phones a lot.

I could still hear them over my loop engages. Must treat myself to some quiets.

And you're fine with the kid's behaviour? Because I thought it was rude

No.

The only thing that you are not unreasonable about is the banging on the window.

vincettenoir · 08/02/2024 18:02

Yes this is annoying. But that is what I would expect from a family friendly leisure centre. I hope you get some peace at home, later on.

sitbackandenjoytheride · 08/02/2024 18:00

No.

So what then?

Everyone else was managing to sit and have normal level conversations, it's a select few that tend to bloody shout.

Drives me crazy.

@Alwaysalwayscold have a conversation at a normal volume? Rather than shouting at each other.

And control their kids.

Silence is not the only alternative to shouting.

SidekickSally · 08/02/2024 18:13

Some people are just unaware of their impact on others unfortunately.

Am experiencing it right now on a train. Most people keep their voices to a normal level but the select few are oblivious and unaware.

The child banging on the window is reasonable. But again, oblivious

SidekickSally · 08/02/2024 18:14

Sorry, that should read the child banging on the window is UNREASONABLE

Sandsnake · 08/02/2024 18:21

YANBU. They should talk in their inside voices and certainly shouldn’t be letting their kid bang on the window.

Meadowfinch · 08/02/2024 18:22

If people want to chat, and get a bit noisy, I don't mind. It's a leisure centre, somewhere to relax and let their hair down, not a library.

Thementalloadisreal · 08/02/2024 18:25

It’s a noisy type of venue really. The little ones are bored, the mums are having a chat, it might be annoying but it’s not outrageous behaviour.

Hardly relaxing for everyone else.

I honestly thought more people would be in favour of being more considerate to others, but I'm apparently wrong!

I agree it's not outrageous.

It's a cafe by the way, so not a generally loud venue

OP posts:
TheSnowyOwl · 08/02/2024 18:28

Are you noise sensitive in general? The fact you have loops suggest so which means it could be that they just don’t realise how noisy they are being and it’s louder to you than it perhaps would be to other people.

MiddleParking · 08/02/2024 18:28

Did you know that you and your child are annoying sometimes too?

sprigatito · 08/02/2024 18:30

This is just normal people-noise in a busy family environment. It's not a church service. If I was struggling to cope with it (I'm ND and have good and bad days with noise tolerance) I would manage it with earplugs or going out for a walk. You really can't expect other people to create a relaxing environment for you everywhere you go.

Haha, yes probably. But I know how to behave in a cafe.

I don't expect people to creat a relaxing environment for me, I expect people to have manners. Is that really unreasonable?

Boobettes · 08/02/2024 18:37

How long were you there for, about 1.5 hours or so?

It wouldn't bother me too much to be honest as leisure centres are noisy places, especially when kids activities are on.

I probably would've got the attention of banging kid's sibling, if it did start to annoy me.

sprigatito · 08/02/2024 18:40

Well...yes, it is unreasonable to expect other people to conform to your idea of what constitutes "manners" in a public setting. Many people would expect a family friendly leisure centre to be a bit noisy and hectic.
