Weird to miss Manchester

Morriseymoaningagain · 08/02/2024 13:39

Originally from near there, moved away a long time, mentioned to a colleague I was missing it recently for some reason (mid life crisis 🤷🏻‍♀️)
She was astounded and asked how I could ever miss that place
Is it weird to miss Manchester

No, it isn't weird to miss anywhere you have previously lived. Has your colleague ever lived in Manchester?

GreyhpundGirl · 08/02/2024 13:42

It's a great city.

Morriseymoaningagain · 08/02/2024 13:42

@Acatdance Shes from there too

The majority of people I know who were born in Manchester with the odd exception seriously love their city. So, no YANBU. Manchester is great. I lived there years ago and often visit for a weekend.

StrangewaysHereWeCome · 08/02/2024 13:43

I wouldn't say so...

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/02/2024 13:43

I live in Manchester but I'll be moving country at the end of the month. I'll really miss it, so no, not weird

Mumof2teens79 · 08/02/2024 13:46

Are you both from the same part?
Where do you live now?
What do you miss exactly?

Manchester is a big place....everyone will have different experiences of it.

Talipesmum · 08/02/2024 13:47

Yep I miss it.

Adm1010new · 08/02/2024 13:48

I’m from Manchester . Know the surrounding areas very well . Which part are you missing specifically ? ( nosy !)

LukeDorothyEricAnnie · 08/02/2024 13:48

It sounds a great place.
And I miss the two cities I previously lived in.

MrsAvocet · 08/02/2024 13:48

No, you're not weird. Or if you are, so am I. I left Manchester, of my own free will, nearly 25 years ago. I live in a beautiful part of the country now and I absolutely love it here but I still miss Manchester. In fact I am currently counting down the days until I get to take my DS to a University open day later this month as I love being back in the city. It's weird. I'd never move back as I am so happy where I live now but at the same time I get bizarrely excited at the prospect of a visit to the city which will forever be "home".

troppibambini6 · 08/02/2024 13:49

Definitely not being unreasonable. I would miss it if I ever have to live away.
Dd is away at uni and while she lives the city she's in she's already decided she's coming back to Manchester when she's done.

QueenOfThorns · 08/02/2024 13:49

Not weird! I moved back because I missed it so much, and I’ve lived in some other lovely cities.

Acatdance · 08/02/2024 13:52

Maybe your colleague was unhappy in Manchester for reasons to do with her life, and now associates Manchester with that unhappiness? Or was the part of Manchester she lived in not great (every city has good and not so good areas)?

Mancunians of my acquaintance are very fond of their city. I find central Manchester a bit overwhelming although not as bad as London, but I am definitely a small-town girl😃

Jimmyspiano · 08/02/2024 13:54

You are not weird at all. I am from Manchester, but moved away nearly twenty years ago. I still miss it. The city I moved to will never really be home.

DJSteves · 08/02/2024 14:02

I'm a Mancunian who has moved countries. I'm never happier pottering around the city centre in the rain meeting friends 😂😂 I do miss it especially as I now live in a desert. I'm going back in a few weeks and I can't wait

JaninaDuszejko · 08/02/2024 14:05

I lived near Manchester for a year many years ago (pre-Arndale bombing) and loved the city. I was at University in Glasgow and adored that city as well. They are comparable cities in a lot of ways and are both fabulous but massively underrated. Good for those of us who like them. DD1 is talking about both of them as possible University options so fingers crossed.

Jasmin1971 · 08/02/2024 14:09

I've lived on the Pennine coast of Manchester all my life, it's perfectly understandable to miss it. There is just something about the place. It often comes across as arrogance but it really is a special place with a special vibe.

Lion400 · 08/02/2024 14:47

Of course not unreasonable to miss a place you used to live and were attached to.
your friend obv doesn’t like it. Don’t blame her, I can’t bear it. But each to their own!

MrsAvocet · 08/02/2024 15:00

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. My DH is from Liverpool and he feels much the same about it as I do Manchester. He's fairly ambivalent about Manchester- we lived there for quite a few years when we were married and he worked in the city centre. He was happy enough but doesn't miss it, but he does miss Liverpool.
I, on the other hand hate Liverpool, and it's not (just) the football rivalry thing. I just feel really uncomfortable there, there's something a bit menacing and malevolent about the place to me. If we ever visit I can't wait to get away. But I know lots of people love it, so it's obviously something about me, not something intrinsic about the city itself. Hence, whilst I love Manchester, I can quite understand that other people dislike it.

Anyotherdude · 08/02/2024 15:10

Not weird. Wistfulness is all part of the human condition!

mumda · 08/02/2024 15:29

Are you missing the rain and lack of sunshine?
Or the beggars in Manchester who plague every street corner?
Or the arndale shopping centre that is just the same shops as everywhere else?

I miss the corn exchange market stalls.

KreedKafer · 08/02/2024 15:38

I live in Manchester. I’m not from here, but I moved here 20 years ago. It’s a great place to live and work, a brilliant arts/culture/music scene, lots of fantastic places to eat and drink. Really good public transport. Very strong heritage and very inclusive.

Do I think of it as ‘home’? No. London will always be ‘home’ to me. But would I miss Manchester if I moved? Absobloodylutely.

In any case, even if a place isn’t particularly nice, if it’s where you’re from and you have memories there, of course you’ll still miss it. My part of London was/is far from salubrious, but I still miss it and I still feel a warm glow when I go back there!

Oh yes, Glasgow is ace too. We go there quite a lot for various reasons and I love it.

My sister lived there for a while and she really liked it too.
