To think I’ve been scammed here - duty dhl

Lennon80 · 07/02/2024 21:59

I’ve recently bought a bag for the bridge treated myself but bought in the sale but an expensive purchase! I’ve had a text from dhl saying I have to pay over 85 pounds in ‘duty’ taxes before they can deliver it?! The website said free shipping.. I’m confused! Anyone had anything similar happen to them?

Thank the folks that voted brexit! (Assuming that you purchased from the EU)

Our pleasure.😏

Lennon80 · 07/02/2024 22:18

It just says DHL on text no number

Glad you're happy

The DHL message always looks like a dodgy one, I seem to always get crappy phone messages, but they've always been legit.

Lennon80 · 07/02/2024 22:26

It’s saying on the dhl tracking it’s going to be delivered but no mention of payments due but the text is on the same thread.

what normally happens do they deliver it then you pay or beforehand normally?

It's a byproduct of Brexit and a standard charge now if you spend over £135 buying anything from Europe.. Aren't we all lucky.

Yep, to encourage people to buy British, support Britain's economy and jobs in Britain. To keep the balance of payments in Britain's favour and the multiplier effect means that it generates more wealth and buying power for British people

Lennon80 · 07/02/2024 22:28

That’s all very well but British don’t make good leather bags or a shit load of other things for that matter

OP posts:
DrSpartacular · 07/02/2024 22:29

Usually they won't deliver until you've paid.

Have you checked on the DHL website?

All that wealth-generating and buying power has gone swimmingly, hasn’t it….

Yes and when I put tracking number in doesn’t mention it

Aah ok, it's ages since I had to pay it so can't remember exactly how it worked. I think I had a link in an email (after a dodgy sounding phone call) which I checked out before using.

CricketWhites1 · 07/02/2024 22:37

This will be completely above board and it's normal practice

By all means check it out though but they won't release the goods to you unless you pay the import fee so it's up to you to either pay that for the release or to refuse it and obtain a refund

haggisaggis · 07/02/2024 22:38

You pay vat on the price of the goods plus shipping plus insurance (if any) plus duty (which varies depending on product). You may also have a charge from DHL on top to do the customs clearance for you. It can all add up!

AlmostAJillSandwich · 07/02/2024 22:39

Yup, it is legitimate, anything coming from another country is due import taxes, payable by the buyer as you're the importer. Most decent retailers will have a notice of this before you buy, especially on the check out page.

Items from the EU under £15 used to be waived, but since brexit EVERY single item of any value is taxed. Items over £135 are also liable for an duty payment too.
Since brexit the handling charge (was £8 RM, and about £15 for courier) was done away with, but it is the courier/RM that now collect the Import and if applicable, duty taxes from the buyer before they will deliver your item to you, by having you pay online.

If you refuse to pay, then you won't get the item, and you're also very unlikely to get a refund, as chargebacks etc won't go in your favour for none delivery in this scenario.

LittleGreenDragons · 07/02/2024 22:39

Contact DHL yourself, either get their phone number or use live chat off their website via google, NOT via clicky links in a text. They are very helpful.

Well yes it has. Wages have increased at their highest rate in 20 years, the stock market is at near record levels. People forget we had a world wide pandemic just as we left the eu. Plus a major European war. Plus many of us who voted leave knew we would have short term pain for a long term gain.

I think it’s another fabulous Brexit benefit - it truly is the sunny uplands 😄

No, it was the same before Brexit. Anything over £135 and not marked as a gift was still charged, even from the EU.
Only small value items and items marked as a 'gift' on the customs form was exempt.

Wrong - before Brexit there was no tax on goods passing between the UK and EU.
The intra-country VAT agreements took care of it all.

Apparently neither do you, as the post you’re quoting is complete bollocks.
It’s worth fact checking things before getting up on your high-and-mighty chair, or you’ll look a little silly 😅

Haha. Do you really think that? I'm sorry to piss on your parade, but you are so very incorrect

Defo sounds legit then. I’d still contact them directly and pay that way. No way would I click on any links

aitchteeaitch · 07/02/2024 22:05

Not any more there aren't.

I have to deal with import VAT and duty as part of my job, and we pay on imports from the EU as well as from elsewhere internationally. It is tiresome in the extreme.
