Should I have tipped??

Am in U.K. - I’ve been going to a local massage/beauty place for back massages, every couple of months as I have back pain.

It’s a fancy-ish place rather than say sport massage or physio, does beauty treatments.

In pay between £75-£100 per massage depending. Was chatting to a friend today who has been going for years and she asked how much I ‘tipped’ the masseur per time.
Nowt is the answer, as I’m already paying £100 quid sometimes for 45 mins!

she was horrified. She slips the staff £10 or £20 each time depending.

YANBU - just pay the charge, that’s not cheap!

YABU - you always tip in top of a service, everyone knows that!!

I wouldn't be tipping on top of that.

I do tip if someone is likely to be on minimum wage, but someone in £100 for 45 mins will be earning way over what I do.

Honestly I don’t tend to tip especially if the service is expensive anyway. I do give a generous tip at Christmas, to my hairdresser and my massage therapist among other people. But I couldn’t afford to visit them as often as I like to if I had to tip on top of their already high prices.

edited to add I’m not referring to waiters, staff generally on low wages. I always tip.

I wouldn’t in those circumstances, no. I always tip in restaurants and leave tips for housekeeping in hotels, but not hairdressers, massage people etc.

Pandadunks · 07/02/2024 18:10

I also ALWAYS tip at a restaurant or for that kind of service but not hairdressers etc

I know someone who use to work in this place and she kept 60% of the ££ as she was freelance rather than staff.

As a rule I don’t tip unless I believe someone is earning less than the National living wage (e.g. I would tip the 16 year old apprentice who washes my hair and sweeps the floor, but not the senior stylist). I definitely wouldn’t tip a masseuse who I’ve paid £100! Madness.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 07/02/2024 19:30

I wouldn't tip. I believe you should pay a set price. I do tip in restaurants if there's no service charge added, but in situations like yours I find it incredibly awkward.

I do tip in restaurants for good service.
I stopped tipping my old hairdresser when my basic haircut, costing £40, took her 15 minutes. She had her next clients waiting and she must earn way more than me.
my hairdresser now is cheap, comes to my house and accommodates me - so I tip her.

No YANBU. Don’t feel guilty.

I’m in the US a lot and I find the tipping culture there is getting out of hand! I used a self service till to get some drinks and food and it suggested at tip!
At no point had I interacted with a human, I used a machine to pour the drinks myself, and picked some sandwiches out of a fridge.
20% extra? No way!
