To think the photos aren’t appropriate/too revealing for college work

DS is 18, he’s in his second year at college doing an Art and Design course, one of the units is all photography based. He’s loving it.
As part of the unit they need to create a mini portfolio of some portraits, landscapes and still life images. There seems to be a fair amount of creative control. He wants to be a photographer so this unit is important to him.

Last night he was working on the computer downstairs and I was looking at his images (he was editing them).
He has taken some pictures of an old school friend (currently 17) in lingerie. They are quite tastefully done (I won’t post them here as like I said they seem inappropriate to me).
Some have been done to look like she is laying on a bed I think and the placement of her hands make it seem quite sexual, another is from behind and the lingerie doesn’t provide much coverage of her behind so that seems quite inappropriate. He’s taken pictures of her which aren’t revealing too, focused more on her face etc. They are much better but he is insisting he will be fine to use a combination and it’s “art”. They are well done I just don’t think it’s appropriate to take pictures like that of a 17 year old!! His college tend to display some of the work too so I’d be surprised if they allow it, DS says they are fine with it but admits they don’t know she is 17.

AIBU to say pictures of this nature aren’t appropriate considering they are for uni and she’s not 18?

His tutor should be fired very quickly.

His tutor didn’t know?

Appalling and disgusting re: album cover

Yep, it's a shocker. Still, anyone who has any old copies of the Sun or the Star kicking around in the loft is also breaking the law, plenty of under-18 page 3 models were used.

I don’t miss the ‘old days’ one bit.

As long as she consented they will probably be allowed. Although the college might not be happy if they knew she was 17.

I submitted naked self portraits to my college course photography module. They weren't sexual they were about vulnerability but I was fully naked and you could see my breasts etc. College were fine with it and I scored high marks in that module.

Newchapterbeckons · 07/02/2024 10:18

Sam fox was only 16 when her own
mother objectified her by sending in photos. Shameful.

He's sent this message - I think he's figured out his errors and will be changing things going forward!

Well done him.

He did something stupid, didn't think it through. But he has listened to what has been said and changed tack.

He is 18. Still negotiating his way into adulthood and the responsibility that brings.

Thanks for the thread op. It seems lots of pp were confused too, so it helps to have these discussions.

Oh you mean read the full thread.

Tbh I have now and I think some people are being beyond rediculous in this thread.

College didn't allow it because she was under 18 which i suspected might happen if they knew that. If she had been the photos would have been allowed so my comment still stands

I don't think the lad has really done anything wrong so all the comments critising him are ott harsh. Both him and her didn't really think through the age thing but that really was the only problem here and they are both young niaeve and a similar age.

I wasn't wrong though.

College were not happy about it because they found out she was under 18. If she had been 18 the photos would have been allowed.

I just missed the part where they had already realised she was 17.

LolaSmiles · 07/02/2024 10:32

Universalsnail
Keeping Children Safe In Education is very clear that sharing nude or semi nude images of minors is a safeguarding concern, though it may be handled differently if the children are older teens and of a similar age. Despite being handled differently depending on the age of the children, KCSIE is clear that it is illegal to make or distribute these images of children.

You literally started by saying ‘as long as she consented they will probably be allowed’. But sure, you’re not wrong at all. The rest of the posters, the courts and the police - they are all wrong.

The law doesn’t agree.
Trust me being ‘niaeve’ won’t make an ounce of difference.

I think a lot of posters here are being unnecessarily hysterical about this

Questioning OPs parenting is very unfair given she started the thread out of concern and then has acted on advice given

OP your son has made a mistake, has admitted he didn't think, has acted to rectify it, informed the college and the girl (who's parents have also seen the images). Short of asking for blood, I'm not sure what more you could have done here.

I'd leave this thread now as posters are piling on without reading that you and your son have acted on what you have been advised on the thread.

This ☝️

fliptopbin · 07/02/2024 10:46

Fair enough, the teen was a bit naive, realised he jad made a mistake and changed what he was doing. But what the fuck was the tutor thinking?
Also, surely any art tutor dealing with classes containing teens should pre-empt this issue!

Hiddenvoice · 07/02/2024 10:46

@ThatsMyPenguin Youre doing all you can! You’ve addressed the appropriateness of the pictures and made him realise that they need to be deleted. As you say, all you can do is hope that he has deleted them
and not emailed them.
Going forward, I’d hope the college has already provided tutorials on the legality behind photography and consent forms, if not then I’d suggest he studies it to make sure there’s no mistakes in the future, especially if this is the career he wants.
You’ve mentioned they are both peers and sadly lots of young people are doing these types of things at the moment but he now will hopefully learn to take a step back and think more carefully about the context of the photo and what he’s really hoping to portray.

It’s good he’s listened to you, that he’s spoken to the lecturer and that the girl has told her dad about it. It shows it’s all been very open.

Missingmyusername · 07/02/2024 10:51

There’s a reason I didn’t quote you New chapter and it’s naive. 🙌
