Puppies reserved after a day?

A litter appeared on a reputable site yesterday. Puppies born a week ago. I messaged asking a few questions. They replied and answered. I replied again today asking when the puppies would be available to view, and they've now said that both puppies have been reserved.

What? In a day? I wouldn't be reserving a puppy (and paying a deposit, I assume?!) without viewing the puppies first.

Do people reserve and pay deposits before they see the puppies? Is this what happens? Is this what I need to do to make sure I get one I want?

Maybe someone went to see them today?

Pussygaloregalapagos · 06/02/2024 21:10

Yes, if it is a particular breed you want. Sometimes they are reserved before born! Risky though as some don’t often make it.

Most well-bred litters are fully spoken for before birth.

Reputable site?? Like what? Really good breeders don’t generally advertise online.

Narnian777 · 06/02/2024 21:21

It's champdogs. Reputable, right?

I've done so much research and everything says make sure you see the puppies with mum in their home before you reserve.

I think it’s very typical for puppies to be reserved before birth and sometimes even before pregnancy.

RandomMess · 06/02/2024 21:23

Some folk don't breed until they have a waiting list.

Most breeders have a list of interested people before the born so I’d assume they confirmed. We picked our dpup by meeting the dad and mum, meeting 2 dogs from the first litter from 2.5 years earlier and saying we definitely wanted one. We visited early because only one was chocolate and we wanted chocolate but so did another family so we had first dibs. Ended up choosing a golden one.

I wouldn’t let anyone reserve a puppy until I had met them. It’s a huge responsibility and wrench to let puppies go and I needed to be as sure as possible that the buyer was suitable. In fact I’ve had irate people telling me that I am unreasonable to refuse to reserve them a puppy because - for example - they have high incomes or loads of land etc. nope, that doesn’t cut it.

Not any guarantee of a reputable breeder. They don’t do any checks. If you want a pedigree then contact the breed club for details of breeders. Check what health tests parents should have before breeding (hip scoring? Eye screening?) Expect to be homechecked and interviewed. Any breeder who didn’t do those things would be one I would run a mile from.

I’m not in the UK but I know around these parts ethically bred puppies would be spoken for before they were even conceived!

There’s usually waiting lists for litters.
