I am on a fixed term contract and I have been since September 23. My manager has encouraged me to apply for other jobs in case they don’t make me permanent. Their has been talk around making me permanent today. However I have just been offered another position which I accepted.

Would you wait around to see if I’m made permanent? Or just hand my notice in?

Guess the obvious question is when does your fixed term contract end?

LifeIsGreatForUnicorns · 06/02/2024 19:50

Which job do you want? Is the new job better? What happens if you don’t get a permanent contract?

Notmeagainn · 06/02/2024 19:50

@TeaKitten end of April

Why be a cunt @peakygold

OP in your shoes I'd take the new job rather than waiting around.

devildeepbluesea · 06/02/2024 19:52

Hand your notice in, definitely. If they really want you it may push them to get their arse into gear.

IlonaRN · 06/02/2024 19:52

Definitely take the new role if it is permanent

Go to bed sweetheart

New job has better hours for me, a bigger team with more culture/diversity.

It’s just the thought of starting over again which I dread but I’m sure I’ll be fine.

I absolutely love my current manager too so I feel bad leaving her in the shit. But it’s neither of our faults.

Then hand your notice in, if they’re intending to make you permanent itl probably get them to do it asap

Needesppressonow · 06/02/2024 19:53

Which job would you prefer, have you told your manager about your job offer? I’d do that and see what they say if my preference was to be made permanent in current role

Pineapplewaves · 06/02/2024 19:57

Hand in your notice - if they don't want you to go they'll make you an offer to stay. If your current role is about to be made permanent, keeping you will save them the hassle of having to recruit someone new.

Caffeineislife · 06/02/2024 20:03

The fact your manager encouraged you to look at other jobs means that there was a real plausible chance there would not be a permanent position. It may be that your current job might be extended on another fixed term contract, leaving you in the same position again in 6 or 12 months time.

Take the new job OP if it suits you better.

Mermaidsarereal · 06/02/2024 20:59

Can you speak to your manager to let them know you've been offered another post but would love to stay in your job if its to be made permanent? A girl I work with was temporary and was offered another post and lo and behold as soon as she mentioned it, she was offered a permanent post because they couldn't afford to lose her.

2Old2Tango · 06/02/2024 21:04

It was your manager who encouraged you to apply for other jobs, so don't feel bad about it. If they're only talking about making you permanent then keep the new offer. You've said the hours are better too.

Edited to add: do what's best for you OP, not what's best for your manager. Always look after #1.
