So interesting ! What field and industry are you in out of interest ? Good for you thst you got to maintain a balance - I always did and still have struggles to

I’m in corporate real estate. My other friends in similar positions to me are either in the same industry or in HR

people I know all around 30-35yr olds:

Accountant (comp school, no uni but did accounting exams alongside working in a firm and worked their way up)

In-house lawyer at tech company (12yrs experience, shitty comp school and run of the mill uni)

Builder now owning their own construction company (left same shitty comp without any GCSEs)

Vet (private school, mediocre uni)

Operations consultant (comp school, mediocre uni in a degree unrelated to job, lots of moving positions on early career to gain experience)

Banking and finance (city job, private education)

Cosmetic aesthetician (sp?) (Botox and fillers - owns her own business which is doing phenomenally well)

Conversely, my social circle and I absolutely did fall into 6 figures by simply working at a normal pace.. none of us did the classic 80 hour weeks, none of us have MBA’s and some of us don’t even have a degree

I also doubt any of us would say we made big sacrifices either to get here. Genuinely! I never missed my kids school plays or anything. Most of the years/time I was able to drop them at school (although they did go to after school clubs). But I guess it depends what industry you’re in and how good/supportive your managers are

interestingly, I’ve seen previous colleagues in the same field as me work ridiculous hours, miss out on their kids etc and they have either not progressed up the ladder as quick as me or are at an equal level . I’m not sure why but it’s interesting!

Yep, same here. I used to have to travel quite a bit for work pre-covid (most customers now are happy for stuff to happen mostly remotely) but I've only ever pulled an all-nighter once, and that was over 20 years ago. Even when doing a lot of travel my weekends were sacrosanct - I would rather get a 6am flight on Monday morning than fly out on Sunday. Otherwise I login at 8.30 and log off at 5 (or earlier if I'm done). I'm in tech, and all anyone cares about is that the work is done and project milestones are hit. I'm currently working remotely with customers in Germany so I'll be done by 4 and will go out for a run than start thinking about packing for skiing next week. I certainly won't be checking work emails while I'm away although I'll keep an eye on Slack (mostly for the team banter tbh).

It's perfectly possible to earn very good money without being a martyr to your career. If I see a junior software engineer who is working crazy hours, I would be concerned that they aren't using all the tools at their disposal to make their life easier and are instead doing lots of manual crap that could be easily automated with a little application.
