...to think this is a really good drawing for a four year old!

My friend's daughter is 4 and drew this picture while I was at their house. She explained it's a crocodile with some rocks, and she said that a lion walked across the field and then added some lion footprints at the bottom! AIBU to think this is way advanced for a 4 year old?! My son is 4 and is still drawing people as blobs with limbs coming out of them!

MN is the wrong place to ask anything like this, all their kids were drawing like 12year olds at 2. And their writing was like an adults at 6. Oh and they all knew their times tables by 3.

Several of us commenting have actually worked with 4 year olds 🙄.

Andarna · 04/02/2024 20:08

I wouldn't call it advanced as such but it is a good picture.

Eggandchipss · 04/02/2024 20:09

I think it’s really good for age 4!! I’ve seen a lot of drawings and most don’t look
anything like the subject until 6+

Chylka · 04/02/2024 20:09

But @Futb0l it can be an indicator of intelligence, which is not to say that all intelligent people will be detailed early drawers - they may lack the fine motor skills to do it, or simply not be motivated towards drawing.

Futb0l · 04/02/2024 20:11

I'd also say some parents definitely encourage and facilitate drawing skills more than others. Lots of people i know show off their childs images but they are often produced following hours and hours of practising art hub step by step videos, something ive never placed a lot of value on.

Of course some kids are innately good at drawing, others have been taught or encouraged.

Wasbedeudetetdas · 04/02/2024 20:11

Intelligence comes in many forms.
😀

Ilovecleaning · 04/02/2024 20:12

It’s lovely. Very sweet. But typical of a 4 year old. My granddaughter draws and paints pictures with more detail. Please ignore any shitty comments you might get.

Futb0l · 04/02/2024 20:12

Chylka of course it can be. It isn't always.

I know a couple of kids who draw nicely but are struggling academically.

cerisepanther73 · 04/02/2024 20:14

@Probablyfinebutworried

You can definitely tell its a crocodile 🐊 a dinosaur relic

I 🤔 think she is definitely got a good imagination that's for sure and paw prints 🐾 illustrate attention to detail...

definitely encourage her...

It's a nice picture 👍 If they enjoy drawing, they will just naturally want to do it every day, and will improve. I was decent at drawing as a child, and I'm pretty good as an adult. I loved drawing animals and characters. I wanted to be an animator for Disney, and I drew dozens of pictures every day. I doodled all over my school books and any scrap of paper I could get my hands on.

I get pretty blown away by the art work I see displayed in secondary schools now. I think that if you have an interest in drawing, there are so many tutorials online to help you improve. I would just copy what I saw around me, and I might have picked up the odd tip here and there. I think kids have so many resources available to them now if they have an interest or a passion for something.

It looks age appropriately dreadful

It's not dreadful, unlike your comment.

Mmmm19 · 04/02/2024 20:25

It’s good (maybe very good) but Not remarkable (also depends if just 4 or nearly 5) but probably better than what mine did at that age as he didn’t and doesn’t spend much time at all drawing. He has suddenly got quite good at 6 though. I’ve seen a huge variation in drawing skills in young children (and adults of course) just like I do with balls skills and lots of other skills

A relative's DD has just turned 5. Her drawings were streets ahead at 4. She is given extra art lessons at school (some sort of gifted and talented initiative) and she's only in reception. I had no idea this was a thing until told recently.

Lougle · 04/02/2024 20:44

DD3 drew the people picture when she was 3½ at preschool. She drew the gem when she was 5. She's still a good artist but not phenomenal. I don't think it necessarily means much at this age.

I also work with some 4 year olds (preschoolers) . I think it's very good. The 'good' ones I see are drawing a circle with stick arms and legs. I have had one, on another level though, drawing cartoon characters, all beautifully coloured in too!

MargaretThursday · 04/02/2024 20:48

You get a huge range at 4yo. My friend's dd used to do really good shading to make things look 3d at 4yo. I remember her drawing a picture of her brother kicking a ball when we were out one day, and someone passing thought I'd drawn it and was teasing her. They looked brilliant, and she still is a talented artist.
My ds, if you'd managed to persuade him actually to pick up a pen would have done well if you'd got three lines and a circle to say it was a person. He still picks up a pen only under duress, although I do treasure the Christmas card he made a 7yo. He drew a dinosaur and a Lancaster bomber. When told that wasn't really Christmassy, he put a Christmas tree in and the words "yum yum" from the dinosaur.

greenbeansnspinach · 04/02/2024 20:57

It’s lovely! Much better than any of my kids and most of the grandchildren could have done at that age, and better than I can do now at 68! She has a great imagination.

IdontPracticeSanteria · 04/02/2024 20:58

I'd say it's very good!

My just turned 6 year old can still barely do the blobs with stick arms coming out! Grin

Flottie · 04/02/2024 21:07

Lol looks like a 4 year old drew it to me

TempleOfBloom · 04/02/2024 21:13

It’s great!

A lot of concentration in keeping all the spikes going along the back, and the claws.

Love the added footprints as a lion walks past.

cornflower21 · 04/02/2024 21:16

Pretty standard 4 year old drawing- average.

Matronic6 · 04/02/2024 21:21

Girls have better pencil control earlier than boys.
But it does show more control, detail and certainly persistence than a typical 4 year old.
I'd say she's a budding artist!

MsCactus · 04/02/2024 21:34

I remember drawing pictures at four at nursery. I was a bit more developed than this drawing - would draw people will full limbs, fingers etc. animals I would put eyelashes/details on (lol).

The other kids were all amazed and everyone asked me to draw pictures for them constantly because they loved them - all their drawings were sticks and they couldn't do details. I always remember it because it sparked my love of drawing.

My family are artists and as an adult I draw very well. I think this drawing is above average for a four year old, but I probably wouldn't think it's incredible for a four year old.
