How has losing weight changed your life

I have a lot to lose and am looking for motivation just wondering if anyone has any stories

BashfulClam · 04/02/2024 15:47

I’ve lost 3.5 stone since June. I can walk uphill without stopping, I have a full new wardrobe of all the clothes I couldn’t fit into. I’m more confident. Still another 2.5 to go and my blood pressure and heart rhythm are all more steady.

MissCalamity · 04/02/2024 15:55

I've lost almost 3 stone since last April. I feel so much better for it. Bought new clothes in a size 14, being able to exercise for longer and exert myself more.
I thought I couldn't do it, did Slimming World for the first 18 weeks, which I lost almost 2 stone on and managed to incorporate some of their ways into my own habits now.
Obviously the weight loss is slowing down a bit now, but at least it's not going back up!
Good luck, I honestly wished I started this earlier!!

Vegetus · 04/02/2024 15:58

Going clothes shopping is fun

SwirlyShirly · 04/02/2024 16:04

I've lost 10st 9lb in the last year thanks to surgery, although I've still got another 5st or so to lose I feel amazing, life is generally so much easier!

  • no more medication for blood pressure
  • kidney function improved
  • sleep apnoea is gone
  • stopped taking sertraline
Fedupwithitx · 04/02/2024 16:04

Tried everything over the years and couldn't keep up consistency. Started using a fitbit and I don't think I'll ever go back. Down 9 pounds now, long way to go, but for the first time I feel lighter, energised, and actually feel like I will consistently lose weight and reach my goals. I think the constant tracking and step counting, calorie burning has just made me want to achieve my goal.

Also one thing that really made me change my way of thinking, if you have a bad day and over eat/ have a cheat day, try to pick yourself up the next day and carry on. Don't just think, that's it I've failed. Carry on and the cheat day won't mean much at all.

Sorry I know none of this is what you were asking, just wanted to share some wisdom, good luck!!! You'll do great

Twilightstarbright · 04/02/2024 16:15

Much more confident in my own skin, can do more with my child. Clothes shopping is fun and I don’t hide from cameras.

A less positive change has been the jealousy from others who accuse me of being too thin and having an eating disorder (I don’t and my BMI is 21).

Pacifybull · 04/02/2024 16:20

Losing weight isn’t always a good thing. I’ve always been borderline underweight/normal. I’m 58. If I lose weight, I have to motivate myself to get stronger and fitter.

tothelefttotheleft · 04/02/2024 16:23

There was a really long thread on this a while ago. Was really interesting.

Maybe someone could link to it. I don't know how to!

FriendsDrinkBook · 04/02/2024 16:26

I have more energy and no longer get breathless when I move around. I can get out and do more , for myself and my kids. I feel stronger physically and more confident in my abilities.

On a totally shallow note I look much better in my clothes too.

breakfastdinnerandtea · 04/02/2024 16:37

Following with interest. I, too, have a lot to lose and seriously need to get motivated to do it.
I hope your willpower sticks around longer than mine, OP!

Lifeafterbooze · 04/02/2024 16:40

Thank you for your replies. Can I ask did you feel depressed when overweight and did it lift when you lost weight

I feel so down at the minute with everything not just weight but my weight is the big thing sometimes I feel like there’s no way out

OP posts:
Guttedme · 04/02/2024 16:52

I like that I can walk to places quicker and don’t have a double chin.

For me losing weight after the first stone of was the start of two chronic/sod off conditions but I don’t fancy going back to 19 stone 10 to prove otherwise. Often wonder now if I lost the wrong fat to begin with and how much can loose skin cause problems.

Youdrivemecrazymagic · 04/02/2024 16:56

I feel better in myself.

I can throw myself around playing/dancing with the kids and nothing hurts.

Walks that seemed too far before seem easy.

I am a lot less physically tired.

AhBiscuits · 04/02/2024 17:04

Getting dressed is a lot easier when you're not worried about trying to hide your gut. Clothes shopping is fun rather than depressing.

honeyytoast · 04/02/2024 17:08

Not motivational but the first thing that came to mind when I read the thread title is that I can’t shave my underarms any more 😂 where the fat is gone creates a cavity that I can’t get the razor into

honeyytoast · 04/02/2024 17:09

Also I look so much better in clothes, skin and hair are healthier from eating better, I feel more graceful and elegant, fitness is much better, I feel strong and in control

Intensiv14 · 04/02/2024 17:11

5 stone lost in 2 years, 4 stone in the first 10 months. My life has improve immeasurably:

  1. I struggled to walk 15 mins before, I can now complete 3 hr hikes.
  2. snoring decreased massively
  3. less sweating in summer
  4. not worried about fitting into chairs / seats and/or breaking them due to my weight😢
  5. confidence skyrocketed
  6. loads of energy
  7. can buy clothes (and shoes!) I like rather than those that just fit.
  8. knee and back pain decreased- sadly not completely gone but much much better.

it’s never too late to start and I haven’t done anything drastic or fad like. Just consistency.

Intensiv14 · 04/02/2024 17:15

And yes I did feel depressed, although just sad would’ve been a better description. I Felt a lot of self loathing towards myself too.

it’s hard to say if it’s lifted completely as losing weight doesn’t solve all one’s problems, but it’s true to say I’m far more motivated and disciplined, and proud of myself for getting fitter. So mentally I’m in a much better place.

No, I feel less depressed and healthier when I gain weight. Weight loss is a symptom of depression and ill health for me. I take Sertraline to help.

Lifebeganat50 · 04/02/2024 17:18

14.5 stones down.

The depression which had dogged me started to lift almost as soon as I saw the numbers changing on the scales and I was off the very high dose of Venlafaxine which I’d been on for 19 years inside 3 months.
Physical health has improved immeasurably
Im way more active and rediscovering the confidence and “have a go” attitude I had before I got so fat.

I did it via bariatric surgery and have absolutely zero regrets

Luckydog7 · 04/02/2024 17:25

I've gained some of the weight back after two pregnancies but for me it was not thinking about my weight anymore. I felt 'normal' didn't feel like people were judging or looking, it just stopped being this ever present thing that stopped me doing things and lingered in my thoughts.

Fortunately being overweight at nearly 40 is much easier then at 18 so there's that.

PotatoFan · 04/02/2024 17:32

@Guttedme can I ask how much you’ve lost? I started at 19stone 10 too, just over 1 stone down so far but I have so much to lose that I’m wondering how long it’s going to take to notice any difference in my appearance and my fitness levels, and whether I’ll have loads of loose skin.

C4tintherug · 04/02/2024 17:35

I was 23.5 stone and now I’m just under 11 stone.

i don’t sweat anymore
i climb stairs for fun
all my clothes fit
I don’t smell
i can fit in anything and go anywhere
i feel confident
people take me seriously
I can bend over
i can wipe my arse properly (yes really!)
I enjoy exercise as it’s not such a strain on my body

I wouldn’t have the life I do if I hadn’t lost the weight, I have more energy than my friends and work colleagues. I am very aware that if you don’t use it, you lose it, so will never sit around eating crap anymore, I’m always on the go, and grateful for my second chance at life and living.
This weekend I went out clubbing, wore sequins, had compliments from random strangers, took the stairs on the underground rather than the escalators, ate at a buffet without anyone secretly judging me for what I ate, went to a theatre and fit in the seats without worrying, and tonight I’m making a “Chinese takeaway” from scratch for dinner.
Find pleasure in things other than food, eg exercise, work, friends, planning quality meals, etc so your life doesn’t become about food and sitting on the sofa. Challenge yourself to new things, eg learning to draw, sudoku, and my biggest challenge is exercise and running- distances / times etc, always trying to get faster.

C4tintherug · 04/02/2024 17:37

Also you don’t have to lose loads of weight to feel the benefits. After half a stone, you will feel healthier.
