Was this ‘cruel’ to the dog?

I’ve got a very excitable dog, still quite young. We was getting ready for a walk and he gets very vocal when he sees people getting dressed, shoes on - all signs of going out.

It’s something that we are working on but I’ve got an autistic DD who cannot handle it when he constantly whines like that and then it triggers her off shouting and screaming. During the week he is walked whilst she is at school so it isn’t an issue.

To calm her down whilst getting ready, I put the dog in the conservatory so she couldn’t hear the whining but then when family members turned up who was going on the walk with us, they said it was cruel doing this?

AIBU here?

I don't understand why they think that's cruel?

eatdrinkandbemerry · 04/02/2024 12:48

My autistic son is triggered by our dog barking when someone knocks on the door.
I have a sign on the door saying please don't knock ring this number(my mobile).
Everyone does except cold callers who just walk away so it's a win win 🤷‍♀️🤣

I have the opposite problem with one of my dogs, he can be really lazy and if he sees me getting his harness he will run and hide. Once on the walk he's fine.

Thelnebriati · 04/02/2024 12:55

Of course its not cruel. Thats the sort of person that might undermine any routines you have (such as not feeding snacks) so keep an eagle eye on them.

IDK if this helps but you can desensitize your dog to the cues of getting ready for a walk by repeating them then not going out, or taking him for a walk around the garden instead of out the front door. But you have to do it a lot, and praise him when he is calm.

Foxblue · 04/02/2024 12:56

I wonder if its cruel when my dog buggers off to sleep in my bed alone for several hours in that case. Or when she potters round the garden for hours in the summer...
Your relative sounds daft!

Fraaahnces · 04/02/2024 12:58

It’s not cruel. It’s actually an effective training technique. She needs to learn to calm down and that is the best way to teach her that her behaviour is OTT.

On Mumsnet, excluding a dog from anything at all is considered cruel and a breach of the dog's human rights.

Train your dog to sit nicely when you are getting ready to go for a walk. We did it with ours and head 18months old when we got him so not a puppy. Take time but so easy to do.

Watch on TV or YouTube Dogs Bahaving (very) Badly and Graeme Hall will teach you how to do it.

You HAVE to be consistent otherwise it won’t work. Dog goes crazy with DH but not with me or DC as we won’t let him. If he doesn’t sit quietly and wait he won’t go anywhere

Rainbowstripes · 04/02/2024 15:22

I'm a huge dog lover and it's definitely not cruel - it's managing the situation so neither the child or dog end up stressed/upset.

Please don’t follow anything Graeme Hall does – he’s incredibly aversive in his techniques. Just Google and you’ll find loads about it

chitthechat · 04/02/2024 16:59

Not cruel. Sounds like the dog is wound up before you've even started your walk. Noisy dogs are disruptive and it usually stems from a frustration to get started their walk, calm it right down.

queenMab99 · 04/02/2024 17:00

Mine drives me mad whining and yelping with excitement, when he knows I am preparing to take him out, I can't think straight, and forget essentials like poo bags! I now put him in the car, he goes in a crate, where he is quiet, beause there is no one to whine at, and go back inside to get myself ready. Not cruel at all , just sensible.

Haydenn · 04/02/2024 17:03

If is keeps your dog below threshold and from being wound up by your daughter I’d say it’s actually kinder than leaving it out.

I would let Graeme hall in the same room as one of my dogs. Absolute prick

I wouldn't trust Graeme Hall with a goldfish.

petermaddog · 04/02/2024 18:57

i put her intheother room and give her a job-get the rope(leash) sits waiting until it rope time .took a while to figure something for her to do

Londonrach1 · 04/02/2024 19:02

Not a problem and not cruel but is that for your child. Be honest here.. if child can't cope maybe better for dog to have a another home...sorry mn but it's what you all thinking
