Used Car seat - no accidents - best way to dispose?

OloOloOlo · 04/02/2024 09:46

My child has outgrown now though Cybex Sirona seat was around £400 when bought originally. Just wondering best way to dispose as there does not seem to be a second hand market however cheap/or even given away free

Yes IABU you should try to freecycle it/sell it?
No IABNU you should just dispose safely as there is no value/lots of hassle.

I've sold carseats on Facebook marketplace before. Price them low and state that they have not been in accidents and you'll find a buyer.

NeedToChangeName · 04/02/2024 09:52

Offer to a neighbour who would trust you when you say no accident

Or, donate to social work. If the alternative is no car seat at all ...

KitKat1985 · 04/02/2024 09:55

We gave ours to a couple we knew had a baby who wanted a spare to keep for the grandparents etc. If it's someone you know and it's a car seat that you know has not been in an accident it seems a shame to just throw it away.

Seadreamers · 04/02/2024 09:57

These are frequently given away on our local Facebook free sites. Charity shops are not allowed to sell these either. I have always given ours away for free and am about to give another high back booster away.

It's in very good condition but we regard it as an essential expensive item that we know we will never be able to re-sell.

Alternatively, your local tip may have a section where certain items are disposed of separately.

Hohofortherobbers · 04/02/2024 09:58

Sold ours on ebay

solsticelove · 04/02/2024 10:01

Always given ours away on Freecycle or to friends.

Tereseta · 04/02/2024 10:03

We have bought and sold car seats on marketplace so there is a market for them. State the expiry date in the description.

justasoul · 04/02/2024 10:08

I put 2 boosters on fb marketplace a couple of weeks ago and I had dozens of messages. They were gone in less than 24 hours. I gave them away though, so not sure about selling.

CrotchetyQuaver · 04/02/2024 10:40

FB marketplace, there are people who will buy them

YogiYogiBear · 04/02/2024 14:40

There's a Facebook group for selling good car seats

lifeispainauchocolat · 04/02/2024 14:50

Stick it on Facebook. It'll sell.

MaggieFS · 04/02/2024 14:52

I sell them on marketplace. I fully understand safety concerns, but I can sell them with clear conscience that I know they haven't been in an accident and it prevents perfectly good items from going to landfill.

BertieBotts · 04/02/2024 14:52

There's nothing morally wrong with selling it if you know it's in good condition and not been in an accident. I'd put it on FB marketplace for a low price (helps avoid time wasters) pick up only. Include the instructions and date of purchase.

If over 10 years old or damaged, take the covers off, smash up the polystyrene, cut the straps and take it to the tip.

You can put the covers on ebay or give to charity shop with a piece of paper attached with the car seat model name.

Zippedydoodahday · 04/02/2024 14:52

Give it away. I think people are more inclined to trust that all is okay when you're getting no financial gain from it

MrsSkylerWhite · 04/02/2024 14:53

Facebook Marketplace.

PictureALadybird · 04/02/2024 14:53

You should never sell a second hand car seat.

Offer it to your local fire station for testing, but if they don’t want it then cut the straps and chuck it. It’s the only responsible thing to do.

Jamtarts88 · 04/02/2024 15:00

Give it away for free or a low price on marketplace or Freecycle. I would rather see a family use a second hand car seat than not have one at all. In an ideal world everyone would have a top of the range brand new car seat, but that's not going to happen realistically. People can't afford a £350 car seat brand new. If you know it's not been in an accident it's fine. Better for the environment too.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 04/02/2024 15:04

I had to dispose of one last year after I had a car accident - I took to our local recycling centre who advertise as stripping them into recyclable parts and incinerate the rest.

I have no beef with people selling second hand car seats but I find it baffling people would risk buying second hand without KNOWING they haven’t been involved in an accident, you’re taking a stranger at their word buying on market place?

Yes I was going to suggest the same. I think we gave ours to friends with small kids who wanted spares.

It’s perfectly fine to sell a car seat that you know is structurally sound and hasn’t been in an accident. Personally I wouldn’t buy second hand, but I’d rather someone bought my gently used plus tested car seat for £20 rather than a cheap crap Nania seat.

I gave away one my daughters car seats to people I knew who were having a baby. I’ve sold my sons infant carrier with his travel system. Once he is finished with his plus-tested seat I’ll either sell it or donate it, unless it isn’t in good condition. My daughters seat got broken down and taken to the tip because it was in a minor bump and I wasn’t sure it was safe (we got her a new seat obviously)

MotherWol · 04/02/2024 15:19

I have our newborn car seat away on a FB free group; our area has high levels of deprivation and I’d rather someone in need had a car seat to use than travelled without one. Particularly if they don’t have a car but occasionally use taxis/minicabs a car seat can seem like a big expense if you’re not using it regularly.

DragonFly98 · 04/02/2024 15:29

Give it away but be clear of the purchase date , car seats expire after six years.

No they don’t; car seats don’t even expire after a set time - some manufacturers will have their own rules but there isn’t a blanket rule. Many car seats can be used by the same child for more than 6 years (erf seats)

Fangisnotacoward · 04/02/2024 16:04

I gave mine to friends or work colleagues as a spare for grand parents.

Saved them buying one for occasional use, and they know me well enough to trust that no accidents means no accidents.

Klcak · 04/02/2024 16:06

Give it away on a local for free site.
