Preparing for the worst

Alex71 · 04/02/2024 09:35

Am I just being daft ? I have started to get together a “just in case” box .
Wind up torches and radio
( not sure what else as never really thought about this)

Has anyone else started doing the same ?
Am I being unreasonable being so scared , the last time I felt like this was in the 80’s when the atomic blast was hanging over our heads and we got shown the film in school. My husband and myself both remember and sat chatting about it and the situation now and we are both worried.

Are you preparing for the eventuality and how ?
Thank you

What exactly are you preparing for? A wind up radio and a torch is great for a power cut (and really you should have stuff like this anyway as a bare minimum) but about as useful as a chocolate fireguard in the event of a nuclear attack.

Catza · 04/02/2024 09:43

What are you preparing for exactly?

bodymOOvin · 04/02/2024 09:45

Yanbu

I think everyone should have a few key items such as batteries, radios, torches ect. I understand some people don't understand full blown prepping, but we have a individual responsibility to be prepared and able to look after ourself and family in case of emergency.

lifeturnsonadime · 04/02/2024 09:46

I'd take a step away from the news and from social media.

Go out and have a walk in the fresh air and take some deep breaths.

WandaWonder · 04/02/2024 09:46

No you mean the end and in the end of the world? If so those things won't help anyone

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 04/02/2024 09:46

If it came to the worse and it was nuclear world war 3, I hate to say it but we'd all be dead from the blast, nuclear fall out or nuclear winter anyway.

It's good to have torches etc though in case of black outs!

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 04/02/2024 09:47

I ha d a bad dream a few nights ago about a two minute warning. I'm also a teen of the 80s. However I refuse to live in fear and will make the most of every day

The 80s were a time of fear but we all had to get on with it then.

I'd rather be gone than live life in a nuclear wasteland anyway.

It passes me off massively we are in the position again though so I will be voting against it or protesting if I get opportunity.

Sorry about the spelling and end/worse whatever you call it

todayshappening · 04/02/2024 09:47

Not preparing but if I survive the blast I'll be be ending things pretty swiftly. That film is terrifying btw.

Whatevershallidowithmylife · 04/02/2024 09:49

As on a previous thread, I have morphine to end it all in case the blast doesn't quite reach me. Honestly there is no point in living worrying about things you can do nothing about.

Ginmonkeyagain · 04/02/2024 09:51

We have a torch, candles, batteries, a mobile power pack and matches.

We always keep a couple of bottles of water in the fridge (refreshed regularly) and have a small supply of stuff that can be eaten without being cooked or heated up.

This is mainly because I grew up in the country and remember the 1987 storm where we had no electricity for two weeks.

Now I live in London so expect any infrastructure issues will be fixed fairly promptly or emergency protocols to kick in.

If there is catastrophic societal breakdown or a nuclear blast I am not sure a room full of tinned beans and toilet roll is really going to cut it in the hellscape London would descend in to.

Butterdishy · 04/02/2024 09:57

Given the state of the world, I think it's very wise to prepare for some disruption. A couple of days' worth of light, food, water, cooking fuel, and power banks. Instability in the supply chains/power grid/water supply isn't unlikely in the near future imo. Having lived in a place with these issues, it's a lot easier to get through with some very basic preparations.
There's no need for more than that. If shit really hits the fan, you'll be dead, or your stuff will be stolen anyway

Castlerock44 · 04/02/2024 09:57

Nuclear weapons are a deterrent. I'm sure the worlds powers aren't planning to destroy the planet they have to live on.

Nerurio · 04/02/2024 10:00

That's odd, this came up at the top of AIBU just after I saw a tabloid article trying to stir up this exact sort of fear about nuclear war, based on nothing new (Putin making the same threats, standard military drills, etc.).
None of that would help in the very, very unlikely scenario of nuclear war, but is a good idea given the much more likely scenario of power cuts from the bad storms we've been having recently.

DyslexicPoster · 04/02/2024 10:03

I'd never prepfor nuclear war. I'd rather die fast.

I always have torches, power banks, batteries, enough food for a month.

I don't get caught out this way.

Willmafrockfit · 04/02/2024 10:04

i bought a wind up torch two years ago,
but it is now broken.

MumOfOneAwesomeHuman · 04/02/2024 10:14

Maybe not a popular opinion but try a two week news detox and see how much better you feel.

Willmafrockfit · 04/02/2024 10:27

baked beans are handy

trubones · 04/02/2024 10:29

Yea I have a lot of water stocked, tins, radio, batteries, torches, extra pet food. But not sure what I am prepping for. If it's nuclear then it's better off we die early on.

mrsedgein · 04/02/2024 10:40

The film you mentioned was probably 'When the Wind Blows'. Please try and enjoy the day and just make your own life as pleasant as possible. It's good to be informed but it can lead to a life of constant worry. Internet, mobile phones and constant news were not available when I was growing up - I didn't have a clue about what was going on outside my village.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 04/02/2024 10:52

I have a couple of rechargeable lights I keep fully charged in case of a power cut. Also an old style telephone, since our main one needs electricity to work. Other than that, I've always got a a freezer full of food that would do a few days before becoming no good, and enough dried to make it to a week or so. After that we'd be in a bit of trouble. Now that I'm thinking about it perhaps I should keep a few more dried things as back up.

There's no point prepping for the full nuclear/pandemic wipeout scenario with loads of supplies unless you can defend your home too. It wouldn't just be a case of sitting quietly at home with your big stash of food while your neighbours starved to death around you. If someone else is stronger than you they'll just take your food.

From my point of view, if the power is out, once my wheelchair's out of charge I can't go anywhere anyway, so I'd just be a hindrance to my family's survival.

But seriously, stop reading and watching the news for a couple of weeks and see how you feel.

Absolutely agree. I'm a prepper but there's no prepping really for nuclear wars. It's better to just avoid the news as much as possible.

Get some basic stuff in. Get some water butts on the go outside. Buy an inverter that runs off a car battery (useful for camping) to keep a fridge running or charge shit up. Camping lamps type of stuff for board games.

You cannot let this sort of stuff take control of your mental health too much. It takes away your peace.

hairbearbunches · 04/02/2024 11:50

Grab yourself a copy of the Daily Stoic. It's about the philosophy of stoicism and you read a page a day, each day has a new 'lesson'. Stoicism is all about accepting that you can only control yourself and all the other external stuff over which we have absolutely no control is not worth fretting over because it exerts energy that could be used more productively and will change absolute diddly squat anyway. It's a very helpful little reminder every day to press the reset button and crack on with the stuff that you do have control over.

EndoEnd · 04/02/2024 12:21

I've watched walking dead, there's no way I'd be surviving some kind of apocalyptic event. I can barely prepare for the next day, so I'll happily just wait for my demise.

LlynTegid · 04/02/2024 12:31

Knowing how slow UKPN are at dealing with electricity faults, knowing where torches are and keeping your phone charged is a sensible thing.
