AIBU to think this may be a scam

Hi, I was looking for some advice please if anyone can help, as I can only think this may be a scam

I moved out of a housing association home on 10th September 2023 as I bought a home. All bills were in my name in the previous property, as they are here.

My son has just received a letter at our new home from a legal firm charging him for gas and electric from 10th to 28th September 2023! He was not on the tenancy and has never paid any bills so I'm not sure why it's come in his name.

Do I contact the Eon, or the housing association or both in this case?

I know neither of us owe this money, but especially not my son who's name was not on anything anyway. I spoke to Eon before I moved, and transferred my account to the new house, providing readings from both houses the day we moved.

This is the first I've heard of any money owed. I'm wondering if it is a scam. The addresses on the letter are right. But as I say my son never paid bills and I spoke to Eon to sort everything.

I don't want my son to end up with bad credit for something that isn't owed by either of us

What date did your tenancy end?

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 03/02/2024 20:27

I have the end of tenancy form I signed with the housing officer when he came to get the keys. It's dated 10th September.

Had exactly the same thing happen to me! My son who was 19 got a debt collectors letter for gas for the month after we moved out. Took almost 3 years to sort it out. Bloody nightmare!

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 03/02/2024 20:43

Can I ask how you got it sorted please?

Google Eons number and call them about it. They can tell you if it’s a scam. If not you can deal with their mistake.

Energy companies do this all the time. They would have checked and seen that he had accounts registered to the address and are chancing their arm.

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 03/02/2024 20:44

I'm still with Eon so I'll give them a call.

Eon have my details as I just changed the account to the new address, so I don't understand how my son ended up with a bill for the time we didn't even live there

The same thing happened to us. My step son just sent proof he didn't live at that address at the date they stated.

The utilities said they chose him because he had a mobile phone bill at the address.

It was sorted within a week. Welsh Water though, not Eon.

Good luck and keep fighting.

My son's just found bank statements from this address all dated from the end of August onwards so they should be ok to provide hopefully.

The end of tenancy for the housing association house was 10th September, but i got the keys to this house in August which is when I started transferring everything over x

He can always go to Citizens advice and Ofgem for support so try not to worry.

Jellytotsburnmytongue · 03/02/2024 21:23

Thanks @Livedandlearned x
