To cancel holiday due to the state of the world.

I'm just not sure if I'm being overly anxious (not unusual) or rightly cautious.

We have a holiday booked to Turkey at the end of May (husband and two children). The more news I watch, the more I doubt whether going on holiday, particularly nearer any conflict, is the right to thing to do. I'm worrying about something happening whilst we're there and not being able to get home.

Would Spain etc be a more sensible option?

Would appreciate any level headed, sensible input. I just don't know if I'm being ridiculous.

Well, my young adult DD and her friend went in December, all on their own. to Istanbul and Cappadocia. What do you think will happen? Only parts of Turkey are dicey.

LlynTegid · 03/02/2024 12:11

I think you should consider the behaviour of too many Turkish men and the Erdogan regime as a reason not to go there.

I don't think there will be an issue with getting home any more than Spain.

BorisIsACuntWaffle · 03/02/2024 12:11

We wouldn't go to turkey

ProbablyHungry · 03/02/2024 12:11

Turkey wouldn’t even register to me as somewhere dangerous to go at the moment.

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:13

I don't know @Lentilweaver I think I'm imagining things escalating suddenly and is being unsafe.

British giverment will send help should you need it, as they do everything me something happens.

Make sure you have plenty of travel insurance and have a nice time.

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:14

Fab name @BorisIsACuntWaffle 😆.

What's your reason for not wanting to go to Turkey?

OP posts:
Fionaville · 03/02/2024 12:14

I love Turkey, but I haven't been there for years because of nearby troubles. Meanwhile, I've known lots of friends who've gone and had a great time. So, who's the fool? Them for taking the risk and it paying off or me for staying away and missing out?
The chances are in your favour for it all being great and you having a lovely holiday. If its booked already, I'd go I think.

Lentilweaver · 03/02/2024 12:15

It's an incredibly beautiful country. DD had no trouble with Turkish men but then she is used to travelling. I don;t think things will escalate in Istanbul or nearby.
Terrorist attacks can happen anywhere. Including London.

Fab name @BorisIsACuntWaffle 😆.

What's your reason for not wanting to go to Turkey?

Thanks

Because it borders iran, Iraq and Syria.
Too close to unrest

Lentilweaver · 03/02/2024 12:16

In re brutal regimes, I think I may not go to the US, then.

ConciseQueen · 03/02/2024 12:16

I’m going to Turkey for work in May/June. Looking forward to it.

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:17

@LlynTegid yes, I can appreciate your thoughts there.

This is my first resort/AI holiday due to having two boys who will absolutely love all the resort has to offer and I don't imagine we'll be venturing very far.

LoreleiG · 03/02/2024 12:17

I would go to Turkey on holiday, and I am a real worrier! It always looks lovely.

Rumpelslutskin · 03/02/2024 12:20

I think everyone should stay home 🤪

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:21

@Lentilweaver yes absolutely- awful things can happen anywhere.

jolies1 · 03/02/2024 12:22

If you’re heading somewhere like Marmaris or similar on the Med it will be completely different from Istanbul (still pretty safe) and closer to Greece than Syria.

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:22

Appreciate everyone's input/perspectives so far. Thank you.

If you cancelled holidays due to the state of the world, you’d never go anywhere. Life is for living. If it all goes up in smoke tomorrow, at least I’ll know I’ve had fun along the way!

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:24

@jolies1

We'll be in Antalya. It's on the south coast.

Yep stay at home

more people who panic over conflict that’s absolutely miles away, the cheaper holidays become every where else

you could stay in the UK, where kids are stabbing other kids and you get acid thrown at you.

this country isn’t bloody safe

PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice · 03/02/2024 12:25

Turkey in July or August, I’d be worried about wildfires. Tourists have been caught up in them the last couple of years and it’s getting hotter. I wouldn’t expect Turkey to be involved in the currently brewing ME crisis, not at this point.

happymumof2girls · 03/02/2024 12:25

We are going to Turkey in May/June and not worried at all.

DJSteves · 03/02/2024 12:28

I live in the Middle East and it's business as usual. Unless you are off to Yemen on holiday you will be fine

Ladybythebeach · 03/02/2024 12:29

@PostmanPatAlwaysRingsTwice oh yes, I wouldn't consider Turkey then. Wildfires aside, early 20s for temperature is enough for me.
We're booked for end of May.
