Huge house spiders in February, wtf?!

Funshrubs · 02/02/2024 22:26

I have a severe fear of those huge house/ harvest spiders that you get in your homes from July-Nov time by the way, yes I know it’s irrational but I’m a nervous wreck in the house during those months.

December onwards is normally great for me as I don’t have to worry about seeing them. Oh no, a huge one in the utility room tbe other day and I’ve just come up to my bedroom and there was a huge one scuttling along the carpet. I’m now sat here with that horrible anxiety that I get around ‘spider season ‘

Why are they appearing now, they never usually do 😭😭😭

Yeah I’ve had a couple too! Trouble is they cause arguments because I end up screaming and climbing up the back of the settee, the dog then goes nuts and tries to knock me down, this makes me scream more and throw cushions - DH gets angry = argument

Lupin61 · 02/02/2024 22:30

Omg I’ll not be able to cope if I start seeing them soon. I’m also a nervous wreck around autumn when they all start coming out to mate. So wish I wasn’t scared of them as it can be debilitating

Mambo19866 · 02/02/2024 22:32

I know that is creepy but they really are harmless and have zero interest in you whatsoever. They are eating the things that make your home unhygienic and they are actually helping you out in their own way. The only ones that can even bite you are to the false widows and those are the females that just stay in the same place. You’re seeing the males looking for the females which don’t bite.

GladAllOver · 02/02/2024 22:32

Please, get help with your phobia. It will improve your life forever, and you will be able to let these wonderful creatures alone.

Funshrubs · 02/02/2024 22:32

I guess it’s been a bit of a milder winter? Wet but warmer? Maybe they’ve all managed to survive this year and haven’t other years? I just honestly don’t know why we’ve got them in the house again but I can’t cope and I genuinely do think I need to get help for this phobia as like a PP said, it’s debilitating and I don’t want to pass it on to my daughter.

I just honestly don’t think I could ever get over it though, I don’t see how I’d ever not be creeped out or scared knowing one was in the room with me!

And how do you do that? Easier said than done

percypal · 02/02/2024 22:35

Yep, huge beast in my house this morning and now I have that horrible anxiety thinking I might see another any minute.

BaybeeTammy · 02/02/2024 22:35

Also seen one today.. can't bare to Google it to find out why as a pic might pop up 🤣

fancyfrogs · 02/02/2024 22:37

I haven't seen any recently but absolutely get where you're coming from. It doesn't matter how many times I'm told they're more scared of me, they're harmless, they're helping, etc etc i am just terrified. I know it's mostly an irrational fear but I cannot help it. I feel physically panicked in the presence of any and like you I also really really don't want to pass it on to my kids. Thankfully DH is not scared at all.

Indorex your house. I hate spiders but Indorex works a treat, my friend told me about it and it works! I do the outside of the windows too and you find loads of dead spiders when you do it the first time. I haven’t seen a spider in our house in over 2 years since I started using it every 4 months.

It kills them?

Whoopaday · 02/02/2024 22:41

Second thread I’ve seen on this today!
spider traps in the corners of rooms and under furniture. Second the indorex on the outside of frames and doors. Bug/spider bomb the attic/conservatory etc

Not everyone wants to have them in their house. Indorex works a treat and I’d rather kill them than have them near me thank you very much. I was badly bitten by a spider a few years ago and ended up in hospital therefore we take precautions now.

Yes, you find the bodies everywhere. Spray skirtings, door frames, around windows etc. It lasts for months.

Funshrubs · 02/02/2024 22:43

I already Indorex the shit out of my house 😭😭😭

I haven’t done it since Oct though so I’ll do it again tomorrow!!

I’m so worried that this is the start of them just being around, all year round.

Ah no I couldn’t kill them. There was a massive one in my bath last year - DH was away for the weekend so I just shut the door and declared the bathroom out of use until he got back.

Smaller spiders I’ve made little ramps for so they can get out of the bath without me getting too close. As much as I hate them I can’t kill them

Are you in the UK? If so what type of spider was it?

I’m a tissue nurse and we see more spider bites than you would believe

This is freaking me out a bit as we get so many. What problems do spider bites cause?

eatdrinkandbemerry · 02/02/2024 22:54

I'm awake now because one has just walked across my face 😳.
It was that big I could feel it in my sleep!

Scotland. False widow, toxicology was done due to the mess of arm. I see so many times on here comments of “oh spider bites are like a bee sting” etc etc etc. I nearly lost my arm so they’re eradicated in my house. 8 weeks in hospital, 2 operations and I’m left with the scars.

It’s mostly just infection (although that can end up pretty bad with small bites turning into huge ulcers)

We had one patient who ended up in hospital on IV antibiotics because of a spider bite. These bites normally occur in summer

Omg! That sounds horrendous. This is making me rethink approach to them.

StarDolphins · 02/02/2024 23:06

Let’s not forget, spider bites are rare in comparison to how many spiders there are.

Unless you have a phobia (which you should be getting help for, for your own quality of life) just put them outside. They do more good than harm.

Mavia123 · 03/02/2024 16:40

I have just had an encounter with a HUGE
spider in my living room. I automatically
screamed and jumped up and heard myself shout at my husband. " it's massive and it's tall and it's not even a BRITISH spider. Yes, I actually said that therefor mixing up zenophobia and arachnophobia in one bizarre sentence. (I think what I meant was it was a tropical spider.as opposed to a local spider for local people). My husband fell into fits of laughter and I am now
hiding out in my bedroom researching spider repellent. Either way this is WAR.
