To think they should reject your job application?

Applied for a job a couple of weeks ago, heard nothing, and today was the last day to hear about it.
It wasn’t just a standard CV and cover letter - it was a fucking nightmare to complete, and it asked for 2500 words of answers to questions.
Is it reasonable to expect at least an automated rejection message to this kind of thing?

Absolutely they should reply. An automated reply literally costs nothing. I'm amazed any company outside the Civil Service asks for 2500 words - I've done similar applications and it's serious work, and it's just RUDE not to reply.

PossumintheHouse · 02/02/2024 19:42

Thanks. They are civil service-related. I wish I’d never bothered! 😂 I wouldn’t be as arsed if I’d at least had a rejection.

Currently recruiting... all sites we advertise on send automatic responses if they don't fulfil the criteria.
However, we've sent a few invites for interviews and not got any response so I wonder if the system is actually working!

LauderSyme · 02/02/2024 19:45

Yes you are totally reasonable to expect an acknowledgement at least.

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 02/02/2024 19:50

It makes me crazy angry when companies ghost applicants. It's literally never been quicker easier or cheaper to bulk respond to the people on the no pile. In the old days they sent every individual a letter! But now we can't send one email with a load of people BCC'd in?

It's so so rude.

PossumintheHouse · 02/02/2024 19:56

That’s what I thought - why isn’t there just a generic no pile to email?

OP posts:
SweetBirdsong · 02/02/2024 20:07

YANBU. They should have responded!

I know 4 people who wanted to get into the civil service, and doing the job application(s) was a job in itself! They spent many MANY hours on each applications.. like about 20-25 hours! And it was soul destroying getting the rejections. They all applied 5-6 times and ALL eventually got accepted though, so maybe they just want to see how determined someone is!

Keep trying @PossumintheHouse and good luck! 😄

PossumintheHouse · 02/02/2024 20:54

Not even a rejection - silence, despite the effort. No way I’m bothering again.

If the closing date was today it's still gONNA take a couple of weeks to shortlist for interview

The second stage is on Monday, apparently.

Was it a firm date to hear a response? If there were lots of applications a two week period for shortlisting would be quite a push. You’re right though, a ‘sorry not successful’ email if you did get through shouldn’t be too much to ask for.

PonyPatter44 · 02/02/2024 21:03

Is this a civil service job then? I'm really surprised if you haven't had any sort of reply, if so. The (appalling, barely fit for purpose) software we have to use for recruiting sends automatic emails to unsuccessful candidates when you sift and progress the successful candidates to the next stage.

Are you an internal candidate? How did you find out that the next stage is on Monday?

Littlebelina · 02/02/2024 21:11

If dates wrt stages on the job advert I found the civil service play fast and loose with them. I always got a response eventually (negative unfortunately but still)

It was. Second stage on Monday, apparently.

It's rude to not answer...dh had lots of interviews once...he still not heard 6 years later re one...he deals with members of this firm daily ...he never apply for a job there again. A simple thank you for applying but not successful is polite. Firm looks bad if not. Just saying. Op you better out of that job if that can't be bothered to let you know... something better will turn up ...

PossumintheHouse · 02/02/2024 21:27

Not internal, applied independently seeing it advertised on the website. I had a “you’ve submitted a successful survey” message that that’s it.

It’s so annoying isn’t it? Not that I had to write 2500 words but hearing absolutely nothing back from an application a couple of weeks ago that was right up my street is frustrating.

The only thing I can think that I’ve done wrong is that I didn’t enclose a covering letter. It was a drop box on the Reed website that just asked for the CV. I’m wondering if I should have attached a covering letter as the first page of the CV.

Too late now.

MyUsernameIsBetterThanYours · 02/02/2024 21:42

Civil service applications are the WORST.

Please write 200 words for each of the eleventy billion criteria in the job specification, of which at least 50% of them overlap to a large degree.

SnowsFalling · 02/02/2024 21:46

YANBU.

I'm guessing I've been unsuccessful for a job, because they have re-advertised with 2 new closing dates since the deadline I applied for.

The other one closed early December. I'm interviewing on Tuesday.

PossumintheHouse · 02/02/2024 21:47

Not only are they the worst to fill in, they overlap - like you say - and the questions tell you little about the candidate. And then you don’t even get a rejection, just silence 🙄😂

OP posts:
Sparklesocks · 02/02/2024 22:04

That’s rubbish. I’ve had rejections some months after I’ve applied before - clearly by then they’ve got the chosen candidate in the role and are closing the vacancy off the system 😄 a lot of recruitment systems require you to send an email to all of the applicants before you can close the vacancy/mark as filled, so you sometimes get someone hastily doing all the admin at the end!

its very poor form, I agree! Takes mere seconds to send a generic rejection out to a candidate.

Bunny44 · 02/02/2024 23:27

I spoke to a recruiter today who said companies have begun treating candidates badly and ghosting them due to a buyers market on their side. He said it's still really rude though and they're publishing an article on it.
