Falling population

Is this actually a thing?
Is our population falling?
Really?
I don't think it is.
All I see everywhere I go is houses being built by their thousands all over beautiful greenbelt areas in our beautiful countryside with councils stating that we need thousands of extra houses for our growing population.
So surely our population is growing in this case, not falling. The erosion of our green areas is being sacrificed for our increasing population, that's what my local council told me when I petitioned against my local green areas being destroyed and concreted over.

What the hell are you on about the population is increasing but your right that the native birth rate is decreasing. The native birth rate is currently about 1.4 per adult, a society requires 2.2 to maintain population. So you ask how is the population increasing when the birth rates of native population is so low? Excellent question the answer is ofc migration. The population in uk will increase by about 10% again in the next year as per headlines all of week across major media outlets. I mean it’s obvious can’t you see this in your community this is pretty self explanatory.

Look, I have done my bit - I have four of the wee feckers. Not having any more!

We need houses more than green fields. You are privileged to want a view over people being homeless.

@RhubarbGingerJam can't read the article but agree that the forecasts are wrong.

Sorry I could 5 minutes ago - now I can't.

Though to be fair to ONS they are planning a new model and predications using updated mortality and fertility rate by end of the 2024.

What this thread highlights, and it's really a remarkable thing if you think about it is that the government and segments of media have so successfully convinced joe public that the reason why the country is falling apart is because of 'immigrants'. The brilliant thing about this is that the gov gets to continue shafting joe public while lining its own pockets yet will never feel the heat from said joe public because 'immigrants'. I hope one day when the promised land is delivered and the country is void of 'immigrants' that joe public gets to see all its public services still going to shit and no-one left to blame. Perhaps it'll be people with a parent who derives from the European Union. Perhaps it'll be people who once spent a Summer in Australia, who knows.

greengreengrass25 · 02/02/2024 22:30

We never get the chance to experience this though or find out if this is true though because the immigration is never ending

TheHateIsNotGood · 02/02/2024 22:32

We keep people alive well beyond their 'shelf-life' dates and it's way too expensive for most young, fertile people to sensibly have kids.

It's a terrible circumstance for many, many people; currently I've no skin in this game, actually I'm very thankful that I don't.

Bluenotgreen · 02/02/2024 22:33

The real issue is the ageing demographic. We are living far too long, and not having enough children. This means there won’t be enough young workers paying taxes to pay for the old people’s pensions and care costs. Plus there won’t be enough people to do those caring roles (there aren’t enough now, and much of our immigration has been around importing health and social care workers, but the gov wants to stop that.)

The only demographic having enough children are immigrant families.

Less than 10% of UK land is built on, so all the “we’re full” stuff is bollocks.

I don’t know what the answer is, but it definitely won’t come in the form of another Tory government.

DojaPhat · 02/02/2024 22:44

The only demographic having enough children are immigrant families.

This, and this alone is what keeps the 'How many of your grandparents were British' cohort awake at night.

The problem, it seems, is that globally Europeans generally have a falling birth rate and an ageing population. Everyone else, even if they have the latter, are going at it gung-ho, thus avoiding the former.

Again, sleepless nights about.

Ive read the world population will increase to a peak somewhere around 2050 ish and then could be only 6 billion in 2100. I certain countries will see quite a sharp decline (think i read italy).

The uk will probably just import any labour shortage due to low birth rate, so we won’t notice the effects as such.

But fertility is declining world wide so Gilead will be here before we know it 😬

World's population could plummet to 6 billion by the end of the century, study suggests

A new model has predicted that Earth's population is likely to decrease in all scenarios across the next century and will peak nowhere near the 11 billion previously forecast.

Absolutely spot on.

It's because the housing is so expensive and the wages low, makes it very difficult for the people who live here

They are not high priority for social housing

Nimby springs to mind.

And realistically how many homeless people are able to afford to buy or even rent one of these new homes?

Homelessness is is a complex issue that isn't solved by building more houses indefinitely.

There are enough homes, just some people are greedy & want more than one.

So tired of 'priviledge' being used in every argument.

It's not about moaning that more houses will spoil our view, we need at least some food security in the face of climate change & economic instability.
