to ask what happened to the children from the Romanian orphanages in the 1980s?

Mentioned on another thread, and got me wondering - all those poor children in Romania in the news in the 1980s, children who had been confined to their cot for months or years, and so institutionalised - they would be in their 30s an 40s now. Does anyone know how any of them are doing? Are you from this back ground or know anyone from this back ground? many were adopted into western European countries.

There is more outrage and protest these days about pigs in farrowing crates than was in the news about those babies back then...

Not true. There was a lot of outrage. Some were adopted in this country then given up again when they didn't turn out to be be 'easy' children to care for. I knew someone who fostered then adopted a child like this who had been rejected.

At the time the newspaper and television were full of stories and articles about the Romanian children and the orphanages, it was everywhere.

George Harrison's wife Olivia was a driving force behind the publicity and rain g money -

Romania has been a full member of the EU since 2007. Just something to note.

JK Rowling's charity, Lumos, is doing some fabulous work promoting and supporting the end of institutionalising children in Eastern Europe and elsewhere. What happened in the Romanian 'orphanages' wasn't unique to Romania or to that time. Children are still held in awful places.

Some go on to have their own children with no idea how to parent and the results can be extreme.

I have a lovely cousin adopted from Romania in the early 90s with severe physical problems that needed surgery - about to get married and a beautiful girl inside and out. Another girl and her brother , adopted late 80s both suffer from mental health issues but have good lives, good support systems and families of their own.

Yes, saw the documentary about the tunnels too. Very, very sad.

There was plenty of outrage. Some were adopted abroad and money was raised to try and help those poor children.
People are allowed to protest about more than one issue, including the plight of pigs . Did you not know that?

Romania wasn't the only one with barbaric orphanages. The Ukraine also treated their disabled children and adults in a horrendous way. A BBC investigation in 2022 explored this

Redhothoochycoocher · 02/02/2024 20:03

I met someone who was adopted around age 7 from a Romanian orphanage around the age of 7. He is a very disturbed man now.

I'm a mental health nurse and have cared for two separate adults who began their lives in Romanian orphanages. Their adoptive parents brought them here and they've grown up in Britain, both adopted as very young children. Both were sadly very messed up young people with a whole host of issues. One is now dead through substance misuse and the other in and out of prison. I know one set of parents quite well due to their adult child being under our service on and off for a good few years. They are broken.

Rubbish, do you think we all watched those harrowing scenes and just shrugged ? We didn't have mumsnet or twitter to take to and pound the keyboards, the most we could do was rant and rave or write to our M.P s and the Times newspaper, not very effective but all we had. Most of us cared a bloody great deal.
