to think my cat recognises my footsteps!

Whenever I come home and open the door, puss is there in the hall to greet me. When other family members come home, he isn't. When the cat sitter comes in when we are away, she often cant find him at all.

IABU to think he waits for my footsteps coming up to the front door and knows its me?

They probably use all their senses including sound and smell. I used to work with a rather attractive man and I could detect his footsteps and aftershave from a long way away 🤣🤣

Haha this made me laugh

cristokitty · 02/02/2024 18:03

My cats know the sound of DH reversing his car (it's electric so makes a weird noise). One of them who I had before we lived together used to wait behind the door when she heard me climbing the stairs in my old shared house. She stayed at my parents when we moved and my dad said she ran and sat by the door every time she heard anyone walking outside. So I think she must have been waiting at my house in the hope it was me.

reflecting2023 · 02/02/2024 18:07

My car waits for me every evening as my car arrives home, and responds to her name and ' come on'

aitchteeaitch · 02/02/2024 18:07

Mine always used to be ready and waiting at the window as I drove up to the house. It dawned on us that she knew the sound of my car's engine. DM was staying with us once, and she said she knew when to put the kettle on because the cat would get on the windowsill about a minute before I got home.

Doesn't explain how she knew it was me on the day I drove home in my new car though.

Cats move in a different dimension to us mortals.

reflecting2023 · 02/02/2024 18:07

Cat 🙄😀

PinkEasterbunny · 02/02/2024 18:11

My cat definitely knows the sound of my car. They are amazing creatures.

laclochette · 02/02/2024 18:11

Cats are, I'm sure, far superior in intelligence to humans, as evidenced by their getting us to pay their rent and bills while doing absolutely nothing in return except looking cute, and we love them for it.

reflecting2023 · 02/02/2024 18:12

My cat is devoted to me and will come for a walk with me, greet me from work and jumps into my car every night when I open the door. She's very clever. If someone leaves the kitchen door open at breakfast she's straight upstairs to find me in my room in bed - and if I sit down she gets uk from basket, chair, another knee and jumps up into mine / no idea what I've done to deserve all this special attention 😀

JamieJ93 · 02/02/2024 18:12

My dog knows exactly where I am in the house or if I'm in, he sniffs me out, can't get away 😂

Charlieradioalphapapa · 02/02/2024 18:20

im no cat expert but I’d not be surprised if yours can. Like others mine could recognise my car/and or its engine sound. Didn’t particularly bother about others, but I could see her jump off the window sill as the car approached the drive, and would be at the front door waiting for me.

@SqueakyShouts

"lanyard jingles"

Bet you've waited ages to slot that in a sentence!

More likely to be your smell( nothing personal). Cats locate their prey by smell quite often, they can detect things from a long, long way away.

But he loves you, that’s for sure.

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen @sharptoothlemonshark

No not likely to be smell, this is a cat not a dog. The cats strongest sense is hearing and yes I would say that the cat hears OP coming.

PutMyFootIn · 02/02/2024 18:34

My cat hates men. Every time my boyfriend comes round the cat disappears. I honestly don't know where he goes. He even stays out all night if my boyfriend stays over.

However, when my boyfriend leaves, SECONDS after his car has left the drive, he comes in.

We joke that the cat is sat in the bushes at the end of my garden with a pair of binoculars waiting for my boyfriend to leave.

Could someone explain that!

TheForgetfulCat · 02/02/2024 18:48

The other night I walked home and not entirely unusually had forgotten my keys. I knew DH might be on a tricky phone call so texted him to see what was up rather than ring the bell.

Cat 1 had run to the door and stood there mewing to alert him to the issue.

Cat 2, interestingly, has perfectly good hearing but never comes to the door. He at least pretends he loves us as much as Cat 1, so who knows?

My parents rescue cat also hates men … but only dark ones. When my very inoffensive dark haired brother visits she spends a week under the bathroom cupboard.

Red haired DH is quite acceptable.

I hate to think what this links to in her pre rescue life, but am intrigued by the ability to distinguish hair colour.

sharptoothlemonshark · 02/02/2024 17:04

Really, you think he can smell me walking up the path, through a locked front door?

When I left my parents house (and cat) I would pop home in my car to visit. Wee cat would trot out on the pavement and meet me about 2 houses up from my parents house. I assumed he recognised the sound of my car. It wasn't an unusual car but what else could it be

JustFrustrated · 02/02/2024 19:03

My rabbits can distinguish us by our footsteps. So why not your cat?

Mabelface · 02/02/2024 19:04

Mine meets me halfway through the churchyard at the back of my house, shouting at me for daring to leave him.

No its not smell. You're right its footsteps and as others have noted, the sound of the engine of the car from quite far away

Ive noticed this, that the cat will suddenly run into the living room and get up at the window. Some time later, say 20seconds or so, my OHs car will pull up. She has heard it from quite some distance away

idontlikealdi · 02/02/2024 20:26

My dog can two the time. He knows when the kids are due home from school, and waits at the window. Same with me and DH.

He knows the weekends are different from the week days.

He definitely knows footsteps.

swimsong · 02/02/2024 20:55

My old cat heard and recognised my son's footsteps when he was still 5 minutes and a few hundred yards away.
