To say no to a dog after what happened?

We recently moved to a home that now has a proper garden and DH said it would be nice to get a dog now the kids are at Uni. But neither of us have had a dog, so we are taking our time exploring the idea.

A friend of mine was going on holiday for a week, so we decided to look after her dog - a lovely Cavapoo. She gave us good instructions, the food and everything. So this lunchtime, we went to the local park for our first walk and DH was so excited about it. All was going well until the dog did a number 2. I was surprised that DH said, he was going to do it. I was already dubious because DH has a weak stomach, but since he wants a dog, I figured he should practice. I gave the bag to DH to deal with it and walked away with the dog - to leave him be. 30 seconds later I turn around - he is holding the bag out at arms length calling my name, he then went completely pale and started vomiting like he was in the exorcist - still holding the bag at arms length.

DH has always had a weak stomach when it comes to all things poo. He changed the DCs nappies only handful of times, because EVERY time he puked immediately after. He once puked because we parked under a tree and the windscreen had so much bird poo on it. He even puked when DCs were just teasing him by talking about poo graphically.

However despite all this, he still wants a dog. He says he will just practice until he doesn't vomit. I have said no. AIBU?

Sorry, but I did laugh.
My dh also has a very weak stomach and all things poo I usually deal with. But, after I recently had an operation he has absolutely stepped up and cleans up after our dog whilst he is walking her. Prior to that, when I went away to my brothers wedding he took on dog duties, all of them. He also did our babies nappies.
If your dh is desperate to have a dog then he has to deal with that aspect of having one.

if the dog eats an elastic band then one morning he sees the elastic band poking out of the dog’s nasty ring piece and decides to “help” and the elastic band stretches as he pulls but eventually yields and comes snapping out covering his lips nose and forehead with spatters of doggy arse batter, will he vomit then ?

Terrribletwos · 02/02/2024 16:10

I could deal with my babies nappies but dog shit (which stank to high heaven and was taken in via my kid's shoes) used to make me vomit!

and when your dog eats another dogs poo then vomits poo vomit, then licks its own balls and arse then comes in for a mouth kiss with him - will he vomit then ?

This cracked me up!! My DDog eats horse hoof trimmings when the farrier has been and makes me heave..
My friends Newfie rolls in fox poo and absolutely stinks her house out..
Sorry OP but dogs are disgusting often..
But God do we love them..

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 02/02/2024 16:18

How will he cope with the dog poo/grass combo hanging out the dogs arse? The type they can’t get out so you have to cover your hand with a poo bag and manually pull it out. He’ll puke for England when he has that joy to contend with.
My mad rescue has firm for that.

STOP IT!!!
I have tears rolling down my cheeks....
I'll never unsee that image..
My DDog is a sausage and has a loonng tongue and often manages to put it in my mouth! No matter how careful I am and especially after eating next doors cat poo..

He couldn't get over his phobia enough to change his own children's nappies? YADNBU.

This ^^

If he couldn't do it for his own children (although I'm surprised you had more than one after how useless he was) then why the fuck would anyone think he will do it for a dog.

givemushypeasachance · 02/02/2024 16:20

Just in practical terms you can get dog poo scoops you can fit bags onto, so it's at hand/arm's length and you don't touch the boo through the bag. I presume you still have to seal the bag and then drop it in the bin though.

It doesn't sound like he's really got the constitution to deal with the gross stuff that comes with dog ownership though. My sister's greyhound had colitis and every few months there would be bloody diarrhoea to deal with. Once he had an accident in the house in the path of the roomba vacuum cleaner. That didn't end well.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 02/02/2024 16:25

No No No No No

Terrribletwos · 02/02/2024 16:29

God, all those stories about dogs puts me right off and I love animals.

CMOTDibbler · 02/02/2024 16:30

I'd put money on him not getting over it if he wouldn't change nappies. If you get a puppy there will be lots and lots of poo in all sorts of places to clean up, and even with older dogs there are sometimes unwelcome surprises to deal with. A recent highlight for me was opening a door in the night to discover that ddog hadn't barked until it was too late and had diarhea behind the door, so I had poo under the door, in the carpet, and alas also on my foot where I stood in it...

Tiddlywinks63 · 02/02/2024 16:31

That’s all very convenient isn’t it OP 🙄😵‍💫

DogDream · 02/02/2024 16:31

I’d say continue with your friends dog or Borrow My Doggy until he can manage.

If you do get a dog, raw feed them. I think kibble fed dog poos are really disgusting but weirdly raw fed dog poos don’t smell!

Riverlee · 02/02/2024 16:31

Used this week as a trial period. If he can’t get used to picking up this dog’s poo, then he’ll be no good with getting a dog.

Not all poos are stinky. Since I’ve changed our dog to a better quality dog food, his poos are much firmer, less runny, and don’t smell (unless the stupid dog has eaten something ge shouldn’t have!).

LexL · 02/02/2024 16:31

I have been laughing out loud at some of the comments. And in some cases I am even saying yes he would definitely vomit if a dog rolled in another animal's poo! I didn't even know that was a thing. I have never had a dog!

I am definitely going to quote half of these to him to get the message across - especially the licking his face after licking something else!!! 😂

DH tried, really tried with the nappies and I just gave up. He was fine with the non-poo nappies and was hands on with everything else. DH has his faults but he is one of the good ones!

@DogDream i agree with you. Changed from kibble to 50:50 Butternut box and kibble (couldn’t afford just Butternut) and it’s made a real difference.

afkonholidaynearleek · 02/02/2024 16:33

Get your DH a soft toy dog. You can get big ones from Ikea 😂

Lemonyyellow · 02/02/2024 16:33

Uohhh the grass poo combi op, he will never cope. You do literally have to pull the grass out of your dogs arse hole. (With your hand in a poo bag obviously)

dogs also puke and have diarrhoea at times- I’ve come downstairs a few times after my lab has eaten something she shouldn’t

my lab also looooves to roll in fox poo. It’s disgusting.

basically if he can’t handle a normal, standard poo, he’s never going to cope with all the rest of it leaving you to do it all. So yanbu

Zanatdy · 02/02/2024 16:34

Dogs are a joy, but it would mean he couldn’t ever take the dog out so no he can’t if his stomach is that weak he vomits

I was going to say the same but with hair. 3 long haired girls in this house. 2 dogs somehow end un ingesting it and then you have to pull shit out of their arse that is still attached by hair

MumofSpud · 02/02/2024 15:59

If you get a dog then yes the poos and so the walks will become your responsibility!

Don't get a breed that is a ' roller!' My boy has rolled in dead rat / sheep carcass (he got in itEnvy) dead fish / fox poo - he thinks that's Chanel No. 5
The worse was human pooShock(at the local park not mine - I cried at that one)

You can't tell by breed. We've had 4 consecutive springer spaniels; two were terrible rollers, the other two weren't interested at all.

Zanatdy · 02/02/2024 16:34

This is true, you’d have to do all the walks if he couldn’t even bag a poo

dottiedodah · 02/02/2024 16:35

Dogs are messy! If DH is not good with Poo then a hard NO for a dog I think .It would be left up to you to sort out .

OhmygodDont · 02/02/2024 16:35

If you can’t pick up dog poop you can’t have a dog.

What’s he going to do never walk the dog? Because although rare he could get fined and if he doesn’t could end up with his face on a Facebook page as the dog shit man ruining the street/field.

Yoir job to do all walks? If he gets up in the night and there is a poop in the kitchen is he going to wake you or just leave it for you? You get to cleans the garden too?

nah he wants a dog he needs to be able to do all the doggy chores not pick and choose.

Doppelgangers · 02/02/2024 16:36

I mean I'm sure he's good in many ways but I wouldn't call him one of the good ones if he couldn't do such a basic thing for his children. I suspect he wouldn't have been ok with you just giving up changing them because poo made you sick.
