Just found out today that my daughter is on the SEND Register and nobody told me from the school. It sounds like she’s been on it for a couple of years but I’ve requested a meeting with the Head to discuss. Shouldn’t I have been told?

Protocol at my last two schools was that parents were forewarned if their child was to be placed on the SEN register stating why and what additional support was being put in place .

Schools should not be putting children on the register otherwise... and certainly not for two years!

It will completely depend upon the schools’s individual criteria for their SEND register. It could be that she did an intervention for half a term, or that she’s had an appointment for speech and language or a medical need etc. There’s no set national criteria for children on a school’s register, so I really wouldn’t worry.

It’s not a negative mark, or something that she’ll carry through her life. I’d probably start with arranging to see the SENCO rather than the head - they’ll have either identified the need at some stage (or may have accidentally pressed a button!)

We had this in year 7 and it was a mix up due to there bring another boy with the same first name and last initial in the year group.
Fast forward 5 years, and the two boys spent most of lunchtime at the 6th form office sorting out that their exam timetables for mocks had been conflated.

The G&T register is usually also kept by the SENCo, maybe your school has conflated them?
