Pick up annoyances

My son does two days of nursery a week. He gets upset when parents start picking up around 17:00, I can't get there until 17:10 because my eldest has a club until 17:00.

Today, he was crying and upset, I had to look in through the door window to see if I could go into the room to collect him - I couldn't because there were two parents in there already.

He unfortunately caught my eye and was really distressed and I could do nothing but listen outside.

Aibu in this is a silly way to conduct pick up? What should I do? It was really stressful for everyone.

How else do you think it should be done?

He should have been brought out to me, surely. They knew I was there, he was upset. The parents in there probably couldn't hear their handover over the racket he was making.

Would have been better for everyone.

Is there a reception or office whom you can ask to check the CCTV so you can tell if there are two in there without him seeing you?

Not quite sure what you think is silly? Nursery pick ups are mayhem. Parents all expect a quality handover, and the staff still have to supervise the kids. Restricting it to two sounds like a good idea!

If they'd left the room, it would probably have meant they were below ratios.

He was upset for a couple of minutes. Not ideal but it happens.

CaineRaine · 01/02/2024 18:10

But presumably they’ve got to maintain ratios in the room which they might not be able to do if a staff member leaves with your kid and another staff member is occupied handing over another.

That's a really good idea, will do that - thank you!

I just wanted him to be chucked at me! It was horrible.

The office are not going to thank you for popping in there every day to check the cameras. They don't have time for that, and I would be very surprised if they agree to it.

Surely there is somewhere you can stand for a minute or two where your child can't see you. Can you ask someone in the 'queue' to give you the heads up when it's your turn to go in?

Edited

Wouldn't be everyday. He doesn't go everyday.

I need to look in the room to see how many parents are there, meaning there's always a risk that he'll see me and get more upset.

Why don't you go and get him ann then collect your older son afterwards if he is so upset? 5pm finish is a long day for a little one

ChocHotolate · 01/02/2024 18:20

What do the other parents do?

Because that doesn't work.

No idea. The same as me I presume. He'll be fine in a few weeks, it's a recent change of room (next room up from babies) and he's probably still settling in. I hope .
