AIBU to think 2 bikes are enough?

DH took up cycling as recovery after an accident whilst I was pregnant...

He decided a while back he was going to learn bike maintenance and build his own bikes etc.
The first mountain bike he bought was the wrong size. This is now my bike (1)

The second mountain bike he bought was fine, used it at least 5 years.

During this time he bought a road bike (3).

He decided to build his own mountain bike (4). Bike 2 is now DS's.

Then he sold bike 3 and decided to build a road bike (5).

He then bought a gravel bike (from US) in parts and never managed to assemble it. (6)

He had now decided that he can't be doing with bike maintenance for all our bikes (bear in mind he bought all the tools etc and took over our basement my workbench as in the long run it would be cheaper etc etc)

He bought me a tour bike for my 40th, bike 1 is being held in reserve for DD.

He has now bought himself a touring bike (7).

bikes 1,4,5&6 are in the basement. I'm not allowed to use the workbench there whilst he's working on a bike as it creates dust.

He's just offered the basement as a playroom to the DC and said I should clear my stuff out as I never use it 🤯 Because there's been a half build bike abandoned for the last 6 months! I was half way through building something for DD and I had to stop.

AIBU to insist he has to sell two bikes? We'll keep the one intended for DD and he can keep one other in there? He has to cover them and I get my workbench back?

OP my DH has two bikes stored in his side of the bedroom. They can only be ridden on very very very special sunny days. I feel your pain.
But as others have suggested the No of bikes isn’t the issue, it’s the use of space that is.

TeaGinandFags · 01/02/2024 14:57

I'm not in a good position to critique the quantity of bikes but the fact he's kicked you off your workbench to then declare that you need to be permanently excluded from it takes the biscuit.

I believe that ebay is a nice dust free place for a bike to go. Thinking about it, what sort 9f bike can't deal with a bit of dust when it's supposed to be ridden? Take matters into your own hands and remove it forthwith. DH is taking the piss.

The correct number of bikes to own is the number you already own plus one.

Joking aside, I would be annoyed to lose a work space because if it. For this he is being unreasonable. However, to enjoy any aspect of cycling properly you need the right bike (road, mtb, gravel etc.) no bike does it all well hence the need for a few bikes if you're a cycling enthusiast.

Fuck that shit. He needs to buy a separate shed or rent a storage/work space. Like he'll would I be evicted from my own bloody workbench! Give him a deadline, then I'd start removing bits...

Count your blessings - my DH is like this, but it’s motorbikes rather than bicycles! Whole double garage full of them in various states of repair - only one of them is actually running/road legal at the moment.

Velominati Rule 12 I'm afraid

I can't help - we have 4 in the house (too good to go in garage 😄). I'm just as bad - last count I had 4 of my own and I have no idea how many OH has. Summer / Sunday best / Winter / Commuting / Fixie / Gravel to name but few! I keep quiet as it means I can defend my clothes budget.

Sorry OP but this and the comments have made me chuckle. DH is a bike nut and I’ve lost count how many bikes he’s had over the years. I have 2 myself, I had 3 at one point. But we have a garage and they’re stored out of the way on stands that have one above the other. I would be annoyed if the bikes were taking up space you actually wanted to use. He needs to find a better way of storing them

As my father in law said when we bought our first house, and moved some of DH's teenage bikes out of his garage "at least it's not dugs". We have 14 bikes in our garage. 4 of them are mine. We couldn't afford drugs.
