Haemorrhoids help

I think I've had them for around 8 months. Finally pulled down my big girl pants and showed them to a doctor. She said stay away from creams as they thin the skin and instead just use epsom salts and change my position on the toilet. Essentially her advice is that I have to manage them as they are here to stay. If I want the area 'tidied up' I'd have to go private. Then she congratulated me on my haemorrhoids. It was all very funny but...

Since I've stopped using the cream the pain has come back and they've swelled again.

I'm not sure I have time for a 3 x daily sitz bath.

Online I've read so many different opinions. They never go vs they clear up in a few weeks.

I'm tempted to get another opinion...

So...

YABU yes haemorrhoids never completely go. They just kind of shrivel and then return so just live with the discomfort and 😳.

YANBU get another opinion and try to get rid of them completely. No-one can live like this forever.

Unfortunately this is a specialist subject for me. I don’t find the creams or suppositories to be very effective, they relieve the itching but don’t do anything to lessen the size of them. I had surgery nearly 10 years ago to remove them, but within a couple of years they were back as bad as ever, and at that point I was told I’d just have to live with them. One thing I’ve found to be amazingly effective is yarrow ointment, you can buy it on Amazon.

@NCforthisobvs Yep! The surgeon said it couldn't wait till after. I could barely even sit down. So instead of enjoying a couple of weeks maternity leave before the birth, I had the most painful op of my life. Not to be recommended!

Oh and of course there were lots of painkillers I couldn't take because of the pregnancy. Fun 😂 I can laugh about it now but it was truly a horrible experience.

GERMALOIDS OINTMENT not cream!!!!!! And get a donut cushion. And anusol wipes or the boot’s version for wiping. Also pour liquid witch hazel onto sanitary towels and freeze and then hold onto bum hole for a bit of relief!!!

Doughnut vision made mine worse over time! There wasn't enough support for my bum when sitting for hours working

Cushion not vision

Oh god - I had this for 30yrs post dc. The creams only ever gave temp relief.

As someone said upthread witch hazel was better as it dried them out and seemed to shrink them.

What has cracked it though was discovering some wipes called Simply Soothing (I'd tried all the big name ones but they were all greasy). They have an acid Ph and have a disconcerting smell of the chip shop - they are slightly astringent rather than greasy - but bloody hell they worked.

You use them every time you go to the loo for a few days (after paper) and I now routinely just use one every morning and every night before bed. Game changer.

Piles have shrunk, no itching, the whole area feels clean.

I developed them during pregnancy and they are always ready to flare up. What makes them flare up is constipation- even minor constipation, the slightest straining to poo.

I keep them under control with lots of fibre and lots of water. I can't miss a day pooing or they flare up. Once one got 'thrombosed' and the pain was awful. The Dr prescribed a product on that occasion called Sheriproct and I keep it in the house now. Have only ever used it twice but I wouldn't want to be without it just incase- it was amazingly effective.

I find that as long as I am managing them well, they are no problem but I know they are there. 😁

had a thrombosed one for a couple of days now constant dull pain 😢how quick did steriproct work, supposed to back at work on Monday night ( lorry driver) 😳
thanks

Currently suffering a flare up of prolapsed haemorrhoids which has been going on for a week. The pain is unbearable. I've had them for many years following childbirth and get a flare up every couple of years or so. The pain is off the scale, I had to go to out of hours Gp at 3am last week due to pain being so severe. Seeing GP again in a few days and know they are going to refer me for surgery so I will need to decide the next steps. Even after five days of high fibre diet, constant fluids, lactulose, fybogel satchets, steroid cream ( the one that a few people have mentioned), lignocaine gel etc I am still in agony. I almost feinted on friday with the pain of having had a poo. I must have spend £100 in the last week on prescriptions, ointments, pads, new clothes that I had to buy whilst on a work visit where bloody serous fluid leaked through my clothing. this is before I even take into account loss of earnings because there has been no way I could go to work . It has been absolute misery.
About seven years ago I ended up on the surgical admissions unit of our local hospital and the Drs said they would send me an appointment to see colorectal surgeons but I somehow got lost in the system and never receives it. Being a wimp I never followed up. I could probably live with these flare ups as they are once every couple of years but my worry now when approaching mid fifties is how I would be as I get older, body/ bowel slows down and I ended up in hospital and unable to stop getting constipated. The pain is unbearable, like a knife up my back passage.
Much sympathy to all going through this, it really is the worst pain ever !
I am going to try what pp suggested and stop all white bread. I have no idea what has caused this flare up but it was literally a couple of constipated bowel motions. I had a back problem/ injury two weeks ago after someone went into the back of my car and I pulled a muscle in my back and couldn't move for a few days. Out of hours Gp thought it was the lack of mobility that caused the constipation.

I have had piles for 30+ years and occasionally have bad flare-ups when I'm not careful with my diet.

What works for me is to tuck it back in with a soapy finger and lay on my side until they stay in - usually best done just before bedtime and with a suppository in to shrink any inflamed piles.

Also trying filling up a washing up glove or disposable glove with water but only just past the fingers. Tie up the glove and freeze and then pop the icicle in your bum for some pain relief. You'll need to put a pad in to catch any drips.

Avoid getting constipated to reduce flare-ups.

Bobbi730 · 05/05/2024 01:13

Thank you for all your advice. Mine are awful and bleed so much. I'm going to try every single remedy that's been suggested. If anything is a miracle cure, I'll report back

Bristoluser · 05/05/2024 01:24

Fill a latex glove with water, then knot the wrist and freeze it - use the frozen fingers - instant relief.

Bath- add handfuls of table salt or Epsom salts.

I'm not sure they 100% ever go but are mostly not troublesome as long as you're not constipated, codeine is a real problem for me.

The creams are a relief but I think witch hazel is better.

Made a huge difference within 24 hours but I wouldn't be sitting on it for hours pressuring it.

I had haemorrhoids removed. They were a nuisance but I could have lived with them, but being in my 20s, they were unsightly and so had surgery to get rid of them.

It was the most painful thing I have ever been through - and I have since had two children!

The surgery also left me incontinent. There is a risk that can happen but as all surgeries have risks, I dismissed it. But my internal sphincter muscle was damaged as a result and I now suffer from bowel incontinence. I complained about ugly looking haemorrhoids. Bowel incontinence is a thousand times worse!

So, think carefully if you’re thinking about pushing for surgery!

My husband had this op cos his piles bled so often he had to have a blood transfusion after collapsing at work. He said it was the most painful thing ever and although not incontinent, it did affect him in a similar way (think not being able to tell if he needs to go)

@dinglethedragon can you share a link to those wipes I can’t find them anywhere

Sahara123 · 05/05/2024 09:41

I’ve just recovered from an excruciating painful episode. Used my husband’s scheriproct in desperation over the weekend, didn’t help at all . Then on Monday GP prescribed a different cream and suppository to use twice a day after bowel movements , within 24 hours the excruciating pain had reduced to just mega painful but I could deal with that and within a couple of days almost back to normal. Also Laxido sachets , around 8 a day and a tablet which apparently makes everything slippery! Oh the relief , that pain is something else isn’t it

looks like they have ceased trading a few months ago - much to my horror - wish I'd stocked up!! I have found some others which are almost as good. These contain witch hazel, and are flushable as they are made with bamboo - like bamboo loo roll only thicker. (I was initially put off by the ridiculous name - uranus wipes!)

The disadvantage, because of that, is that you have to handle them more gently as it's easy to put your fingers through them if you are too robust.
