To think the bakes in Greggs etc should be warm/hot?

I had not been to Greggs for many years till today, but maybe I missed something. There are cabinets that look like heated ones with the pastries etc. But they are not heated and the blimming thing was cold, like a stodgy rock. I can't imagine running a pasty shop that didn't heat them up. They won't even put it back in the oven...In a microwave is not an option. I'm traumatised. In Sains the pasties are in a hot cabinet?

AIBU or are all shops that sell this stuff like that?
Or this Greggs just blows cos it's in a really shitty area/ I'm a twat and should shut the front door..lol

Is it a new thing? I went to Greggs for the first time in years the other day and got a stone cold sausage and bean bake. I threw it in the bin. Why does anyone bother buying from there? I always remembered their bakes being like lava.

Rosejasmine · 02/02/2024 17:44

They bake throughout the day, so next time ask them if any are still hot or are there any about to come out of the oven- you might have to wait a few minutes but one straight out of the oven is like molten lava.

Purpleavocado · 02/02/2024 17:48

DH just had food poisoning after eating a Gregg's tuna sandwich and sausage roll, so I won't be risking any more food from there

nadine90 · 02/02/2024 18:20

Yes! Sorry I meant we didn’t reheat! We had fresh trays coming out of the oven all day.
Glad to see they put leftovers on too good to go these days. It felt so wrong throwing so much food away x

Blame the government for charging 20% more for the exact same thing if it’s kept warm. See also cold sandwiches vs toasted. It’s bottom end of the market and I guess if they did keep them warm but added the 20% VAT then they’d get grief for being expensive. Chip shops keep pies/pasties in a hot box but you’ll have to wait in a queue of people moaning that the pasties are a rip off compared to greggs.

artfuldodgerjack · 02/02/2024 18:40

My local Greggs always has hot bakes, sausage rolls and pasties. They are usually so hot that they are like liquid lava! You have to leave them to cool down before eating them.

Amazing it's so successful then isn't it?

Not really. It’s cheap. Cheap sells.

doilooklikeicare · 02/02/2024 19:24

@Pottedpalm it's cheap and edible.....

That's what sells ....

www.reuters.com/business/retail-consumer/uk-food-retailer-greggs-shows-resilience-with-142-quarterly-sales-rise-2023-10-03/#:~:text=N)%20%2C%20opens%20new%20tab.,148.3%20million%20pounds%20in%202022.

You'd not say no, if you owned that?

Pottedpalm · 02/02/2024 19:37

doilooklikeicare · 02/02/2024 19:24

I’d not say no to eating it, do you mean? I certainly would. Those bakes are packed full of trans fats, salt etc.
Do you think the shareholders eat the crap? I doubt it.

doilooklikeicare · 03/02/2024 08:09

@Pottedpalm don't know, but all I'm saying is a lot of people seem happy with it.... considering it's so shit?

Also, I don't think it's your job to dictate to people what they should eat? Do you?

OP wasn't asking if it's good quality, nutritious food, she was asking about the temperature of the food.

Sprogonthetyne · 03/02/2024 08:12

Selling things that are still hot from baking is taxed differently to food that is reheated or kept warm. I generally go in with a couple of options in mind and ask which came out most recently. If you're taking them home, an airfryer warms them up really well.

OldKingCole · 03/02/2024 08:17

Amazing it's so successful then isn't it?

Not really - with obesity levels soaring it’s not amazing at all.

BobbyBiscuits · 01/02/2024 00:16

Thank you, I did not know that. What a bunch of tossers, lol! It was 2 quid for a cold pastie? You can buy like 4 frozen/ chilled ones and cook it at home for that price. I'm not going back, haha.

You'd have to pay another 20% VAT for it to be kept warm!

As for the cost, you do realise they have to pay staff wages, rent on the shop, water rates, business rates, power, security, waste disposal, bank charges, marketing, administration, management, staff training, uniforms, etc etc etc.

You really can't compare buying from a supermarket and cooking yourself at home to buying something cooked elsewhere by someone else and served to you!

LlynTegid · 03/02/2024 08:47

On the few occasions I have gone in later in the day to Greggs or another baker and the pasties/bakes might be cold, I have always been told, so I can choose not to buy them if I want them hot.

I'd prefer them to be sold cold, perhaps at a discount, than being thrown out. I abhor food waste.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/02/2024 11:54

@Kazzyhoward Yeah, you are not wrong. I said that in a fit of pique. I did go back the next day and try again, haha.
I would happily pay an extra 50p or whatever for the stuff to be hot TBH. The problem I have is I eat really slowly, so half way through it would probably get cold anyway! I guess I need to eat faster!

Rule #1 for buying from Greggs, if you want hot food: 'Hi there, what's still hot?'.
Works for me on the odd occasion I visit Greggs!

TerfTalking · 04/02/2024 06:59

Greggs pasties are disgusting these days and contain different flavoured slop.

Flatleak · 04/02/2024 07:55

I've never heard of this and never had a cold Greg's pasty before, always been hot. I must have been oddly lucky or London's Gregs (of which there are sadly few) are cheating the system!

There used to be a "special" Greggs where I used to live. It sold all the day old stock from other stores, but the sandwiches and soup were fresh. The prices were so good too. The bakes and sausage rolls were like 15p each and many of the cakes were 10 or 15p.
