If I rent a property and after I’ve paid the rent I’m left with £404 month. This is also to cover gas and electric top ups, car insurance, petrol, food for myself and one child, debt repayments. Is this enough to live on each month?

Calvinlookingforhobbs · 31/01/2024 21:58

I don’t think so

Dacadactyl · 31/01/2024 21:58

I would say no.

Nail123 · 31/01/2024 21:58

nope

EdgarsTale · 31/01/2024 21:58

No

StopTheBusINeedAWeeWeeAWeeWeeBagOChips · 31/01/2024 21:59

How much are your debt repayments, how much petrol do you use?

I wouldn't think it's anything like enough, are you claiming everything you're entitled to?

Greensleevevssnotnose · 31/01/2024 21:59

No, my electric is400 a month, council tax nearly £300 without anything ejsr

Mumaway · 31/01/2024 22:00

Probably not,.no.

DaIIie · 31/01/2024 22:00

You have to cover all those things from the £404? No definitely not sorry

Shinyandnew1 · 31/01/2024 22:00

Very unlikely, I’d say. When you say gas and electricity ‘top ups’, what does that mean? Do you pay a set DD or something and this is if you have to use more? Or do you just mean gas and electric bill?

Waitingforsummer75 · 31/01/2024 22:00

No. What about water/sewage and council tax?
However, if you have a low income would you be entitled to claim Universal Credit?

ChesterFoxE · 31/01/2024 22:01

I think you need to write down all of those extra outgoings & work it out.

How much is your debt repayment? Gas & electric etc.

Personally I'd say no.

HalloumiGeller · 31/01/2024 22:01

Nope, definitely not.

A quarter of that would very likely be spent on council tax alone, then gas & electric will easily be another £100 a month, so that leaves you with £200 for food, fuel, toiletries, utilities, clothes, phone etc etc. Sorry, that's not doable.

Sunshine977 · 31/01/2024 22:01

Sorry should have said I get council tax reduction and it’s currently reduced to £0 but I do pay water bills

OP posts:
BoohooWoohoo · 31/01/2024 22:02

How much is council tax? Debt repayments etc ?

I would say no

Sunshine977 · 31/01/2024 22:02

By top ups I have a prepayment meter so I’d say around £90 a month for gas and electric

OP posts:
BudgetFoodie · 31/01/2024 22:02

No, that is not enough.

You need to sit down and work out a realistic budget of what you can afford.

Sunshine977 · 31/01/2024 22:03

Debt repayments around £50

OP posts:
JockTamsonsBairns · 31/01/2024 22:03

It's impossible to say without knowing figures.

How much gas/electric/petrol?
How much debt repayments?

You have one child - a baby? Or a teenager?

Ace56 · 31/01/2024 22:05

No definitely not. Food for 2 people must come to at least another 100-150 so you’d be left with about £50 after all expenses paid

Sunshine977 · 31/01/2024 22:07

Petrol probably around £60
gas and electric £90
Debr repayments £50
Car insurance £84
water £28

then there is food and essentials. my child is 5

OP posts:
NamelessNancy · 31/01/2024 22:08

Looks very unlikely. What about other expenses? Do you have a plan for when your car's MOT is due? Repairs? Clothing? Birthdays/other gifts? Lots of things which don't seem to be covered beyond rent and the other categories. Sounds like you'd be getting yourself into a tricky situation. Sorry.

DaIIie · 31/01/2024 22:09

So £92 a month for food and essentials and probably other things you've forgotten. That's completely impossible.

laclochette · 31/01/2024 22:09

So you'd have about £90 a month for food and essentials. That is clearly not enough. You would probably end up getting into a debt spiral very quickly.

Kindly, I'm not sure why you're asking people here when it's a simple question of addition and subtraction. Is there a question behind your question - are you asking to get views here to make a point to someone else in your life, for example? I only ask to try to understand why you're asking this.

Sunshine977 · 31/01/2024 22:09

No left over money for even things like school uniform, car repairs, any of the above.

The reason I ask is I’m really struggling in my current property to make ends meet and I’ve been trying to look for somewhere cheaper and I was advised to speak to the council but they’ve said I can afford my current property on these figures

OP posts:
DaIIie · 31/01/2024 22:10

They are ridiculous
