To be fed up with this promotion saga

I've posted about this before but now I have been told for like the 3rd time that I'm not being promoted but my colleague is. My manager calls it an "admin helper" and told me the reason why, and I get it.

Bizarrely on a very odd twist of fate my manager admitted today that she's not autonomous in the slightest and uses other colleagues as crutches (I don't ).

My manager also said that it was not even skills based and no reflection on my performance.

I feel like she regrets it but c'est la vie!

Sorry to hear. Can you move sideways in your organisation to get a new boss? I often found that can help when you can't move directly up....

Makeitmakesensetoday · 31/01/2024 15:41

Sorry your post makes no sense to me. What do you mean by admin helper? Either way make plans to leave, sounds awful.

My manager had to many direct reports, so the new role is to help her have fewer direct reports.

No way to move sideways for now. Although my manager has promised me she'll help me if I find somewhere to go.

So she promoted someone else that she doesn't like as much basically to keep you? That's shitty. Stop doing so much for her, don't be so friendly and move on ASAP.

Kind of? I was telling a colleague I see her as a friend now and not my manager. Regardless of whatever she wants to call this "admin helper" I will now report to her.

However, in this "re-org" I was given a new made up role, with very specific tasks that the new TL has never done. So, if the idea is that the tasks of my new role take all of my time, then what would the 1:1s be about with my new TL is she's never done what I'm doing? Sure, I can tell her about HR related type things, but I'll be my own island. She can't give me feedback because we'd be frankly speaking different languages.

Sorry none of what you just said makes any sense.

But either way - she is not your friend.
She is deliberately holding you back. Stop being a doormat and get out there and job hunt.

The whole idea is that I'd hate the promoted role because I don't enjoy structured work as much as my colleague, nor do I give "strict teacher" vibes and that's what our other colleagues need.

So the conclusion is that I would hate this promotion/not be the right step for me.

And was that what you said to your manager, or the reasoning you were given?

Don't believe this tripe. Move on.

I agree to an extent. I actually don't like me role (came to that conclusion about 5/6 months ago).

It does pay very handsomely and have been given extra responsibilities that I DO enjoy.

So as much as it hurts, I admit she's right in a way.

Ultimately I know my newly promoted colleague won't be able to handle all of the heat, and I'll have to help, and I will - selectively.

In the meantime I'll look for something else, although it won't be easy. Last week a similar role (but with people management attached to it) only paid between 45-55% of my current salary. There's obviously more roles out there, but I can afford to be picky.

Time to leave. You're not valued unfortunately so it's best to go elsewhere. Hard lesson to learn but it's important to be proactive.

and believe me I will, but it's extremely comfy here too. I basically do whatever I want with my day - I'm fully remote- and there are weeks when I barely work 25hrs because the workload can be that low (the opposite can be true and I work weekends). I can do all the school runs. I can jump on my Peloton between meetings, I get to travel and my new salary will be close to £80k...

So again no rush, but will definitely start looking.

My DH says nothing makes any sense BUT that I should change my mindset that my job is a means to an end, and not it being the end.
