To give up my 100% WFH job?

Hi there,

I joined my company just over a year and half ago and always had the ambition to become a Manager from day 1, letting my own line manager know.

My company is going through a redesign within my department. There have been talks for over a year now and no one knows what will come out of that. My manager says that he can't promise me if/when there'll be a Manager position will open up.

Recently a position opened up in another department, which would practically mean a promotion if I got the job.

Current job:
-Senior Associate
-100% WFH
-£33k
-Easy job

New job:
-Manager
-2 days in the office (I'll need to relocate but I wouldn't mind, in fact might be better for me as I'm considering moving there regardless)
-£40k
-Boring and demanding job

Of course there's a chance I might not get the job but the hiring manager thinks very highly of me and I'd be a very strong candidate. I just want to make my mind up fully before applying not to mess them about.

My friends think I'm being unreasonable for wanting to leave my 100% remote job for not much gain. Would you apply for the new position?

It really depends how you feel? Do you want to continue climbing the ladder? Or use the promotion to side step into another organisation that may bring an interesting role and better pay? And is that the initial uplift and then each year you get an increase? (Like a pay scale?). This can only be your decision. If it's what you want then do it. But examine why you want it? Sometimes people just want status and promotion for promotion sake...this will lead to unhappiness and disappointment in my opinion; as it's not reason enough.

Me myself in my career they have a similar scale. I personally would never go beyond senior to manager. For a number of reasons it takes me off the front line supporting people and also the uplift in pay I personally feel is laughable for supervising other people. Once you take tax and NI off there is literally a hundred a week left 🙈

Choose what's best for you... especially if it's merely a stepping stone to the end goal 👍

All jobs have boring bits to them especially as a manager!
I wouldn’t tell myself that 7k isn’t enough of an increase from your current salary (not saying don’t negotiate), consider it as a stepping stone for progression.
All these people saying it’s not enough for me, well what would be? Would someone honestly pay someone unambitious and set in their ways an extra £20k? No, you need to be ambitious and open to learning new things. You could be earning loads in a few years if you get the right experience.

Go for it but negotiate a higher salary, resettlement package and only 1 day office based

For £400 more per month Absolutely NOT

After tax and travel. Not worth it! WfH is like gold dust at the moment. Hold on to it with both hands and feet!
