For those who don't know. Threads was a tv film about a nuclear bomb hitting the UK. Was made about 40 years ago

I think it's time for a remake. Aibu

I've never forgotten the woman wetting herself on the pavement

It's still powerful. I wouldn't want a remake

That was an iconic scene. So simple, but so realistic

Where is it available to watch? I watched it as a teen. I'm in my early 60s now and its stayed with me.

It's on Britbox. I think they have a free trial.

ExpressCheckout · 31/01/2024 06:33

Doesn't need re-making.

There is a social realism to the original that would be alien to modern TV producers. Can you imagine a remake? It would have an intrusive musical track running throughout, actors speaking in muffled voices, and no scene lasting longer than half a second particularly if made by the BBC.

No, keep the original. It manages to capture how terrifying it was for our generation of 70s/80s kids, and it also shows how compelling TV can be made, even on a low budget.

It's being repeated this Wednesday night on bbc4

I've actually never seen it (not sure why as I'm the right age) and really not sure I want to/should reading everyone's comments!

SideEyeSal · 07/10/2024 13:56

No. A thousand times no. Or 'When the wind blows'. Utterly traumatising films. I saw Threads as a teenager and didn't sleep for a week. Even thinking about either film makes me feel sick.

Thanks!

A brilliant, and most poignant film.

It's being repeated this Wednesday night on bbc4

So that's another generation traumatised - I've still got it on DVD but never watched it again

If it ever happens I just hope I'm right in the centre of the blast (which is highly likely as my city has a nuclear reactor and other facilities)

I've never seen it so I really want to brave it this Wednesday but the time doesn't work for me.

Does anyone know if things on i-player are always available on catch-up? Really don't want to miss it.

MrTwatchester · 07/10/2024 19:19

It doesn't need remaking, but it should be compulsory viewing, along with War Games.

Gingernaut · 07/10/2024 19:19

It's been resurrected as it's the 40th Anniversary of when it was first shown

BBC Radio 4 did a show about it

LoudGreyBalonz · 07/10/2024 19:22

I think there's something to be said for a remake. Part of the terror of it was how real everything was, in the context of the (then) present day. Also, modern nuclear weapons would likely be significantly more destructive than those from the 80s.

PosiePetal · 07/10/2024 19:37

No, it isn’t necessary. Nuclear war with Russia felt (and was) very close in the 1980’s. We watched the film ‘When the Wind Blows’ and read the book ‘Z for Zachariah’ in school. I grew up near a large naval base and we were instructed in school on what to do in the event of a strike (hide under our desk!). We had leaflets put through the door at home on how to survive radioactive fall out. ‘Threads’ was completely traumatising. I froze in terror every time I heard a loud plane back then. Everyone did. It was all completely pointless as living where we did, it would have been all over in an instant for us, anyway… thankfully. Personally, I don’t think there will be a WW3. If it was ever going to happen it would have done so in the 1960’s - 1980’s.

DucklingSwimmingInstructress · 07/10/2024 19:44

I watched it in short chunks in my drinking days. Only way to do it, I think!

Thing is, peace doesn't depend on only the West stopping supplying arms to Ukraine and Israel. Russia has said they want to invaded Baltic countries and bomb London, no matter what.

If the West doesn't -try- to stand up to the aggressive leaders in a moderate way, what happens when you get two crazy egotistical tyrants both of whom are intent on war and both of whom would use nuclear weopons rather than lose? North Korea is very close to nuclear bombs, Iran isn't far off, and neither country is stable or sane.

Oneearringlost · 07/10/2024 20:01

10.15pm BBC 4 9th Oct.

RoseAndRose · 10/10/2024 18:17

It's on iPlayer - it says it will be available for the next 11 months

LoudGreyBalonz · 13/10/2024 20:09

I've been wanting to watch it for years, as it's a genre I enjoy, but DP and I were really underwhelmed by it. I think its of its time.

Finallyfree23 · 13/10/2024 20:26

I was mid-teens when it was first aired, and it absolutely traumatised me. I still remember the horror of wetting the bed and crawling in with my parents sobbing that night…I was a teenager ffs!

Couldn’t bring myself to watch it when it was shown the other day, just that memory is powerful enough to remind me how important peace is.

Oneearringlost · 18/10/2024 11:34

We recorded it and watched it again last night. So grim, also watched the 15 minute Mick Jackson documentary, on his making of it.
I wonder if it's been exported or shown abroad, ever?
Bleakly, it reminded me of the devastation and suffering in Gaza without the radiation sickness.

I think there's something to be said for a remake. Part of the terror of it was how real everything was, in the context of the (then) present day. Also, modern nuclear weapons would likely be significantly more destructive than those from the 80s.

The trend since the end of the Cold War has been to have fewer, smaller, but better targeted, nuclear warheads. Not that it would make much difference to the consequences of a full nuclear exchange.

It was interesting to hear Zelenskyy talking about the consequences for Ukraine of giving up their nuclear weapons in the 90s. They're the only country to have done so, and it hasn't been a huge success.

CagneyAndLazy · 18/10/2024 16:16

The most poignant thing rewatching it today is the build up to the nuclear exchange.

The snippets of news stories about Russia and the Middle East in the background on the TVs in many scene are so similar to current day news (albeit reversed in some ways) that it makes it even more realistic than it was 40 years ago for me.

People going about their lives, occasionally mentioning the news about a conflict going on thousands of miles away, a few escalations and then the unthinkable happens.

It's a great film but always shocking to watch.
