I desperately want to have an established skincare routine and have some go-to makeup and beauty products that suit my skin. I find the range of makeup and skincare on offer so confusing (I honestly dont know what most of it does, or what i need) and I'm constantly buying different products and brands everytime I run out! None of which work for me (also spend a lot of time wandering around boots trying out various testers) Nothing seems to make me feel like it's benefiting my skin and nothing leaves my skin feeling nice and soft.

I'm coming up to mid 30s and have very red, dry skin and large pores.
Currently use varying brands of face wash (whatever I've decided to try that month, all cheapish - star face, dead sea magik, clean and clear, simple, cerave - none of them make my skin feel amazing, all leave my skin feeling a bit tight tbh) same with moisturiser (nivea seems to be ok, doesnt react with my skin, but doesnt really combat the dryness) Again, I wouldn't mind spending a bit extra if I knew that it would work for my skin.

Same for foundation and primer...currently use loreal paris true match, its the best out of all I've tried (revolution, elf, rimmel) but still not great, my pores look big and my skin looks dry. Has anyone tried the no 7 airway brush primer?

Could anyone share your )budget friendly) daily skin care routines? And give some recommendations for facewash, moisturiser (spf) primer and foundation? (Around the 20 to 30 pound) Do any of you use serums, if so, what ones? And is this in addition to normal moisturiser?

Tia

Try Benefit Pore-fessional under your make-up.
A tube of it lasts aaaages, since you only need a wee bit. It's the only product I've found that truly minimises pores.

I now only use Gerlinde stuff- cleanser and moisturiser. That’s the extent of my skincare regime and my skin is well nourished with just those 2 things. I honestly think people are doing more harm than good with complex beauty routines and wonder how they have the time! Google Gerlinde and have a look at her website. She’s also really responsive to emails. I bought something once and contacted her to say it hadn’t agreed with me. She went back through all my past orders and identified the ingredient that was in the one thing I didn’t get on with but wasn’t in the others! Can’t recommend the stuff enough.

I use elf skincare, I used to use Charlotte tilbury but Elf is just as good

K37529 · 30/01/2024 22:13

I have very dry skin on my face and I've started using Olay day moisturiser every day for the past two weeks. I find it really good, I can now wear foundation again without that scaly look if you know what I mean.

Riverlee · 30/01/2024 22:14

The Simple range is very good.

I love this, smells lovely too.
@mrsfindlay if your skin feels dry and tight I’d avoid a soapy face wash and use a cream cleanser like liz Earle cleanse and polish and aldi actually do a very similar one

i use toner to close pores, bare minerals serum and liz Earle moisturiser.

I have psoriasis and feel these products help my skin

Nivea soft moisturiser is also very lovely and not pricey

LuckyCharm9 · 30/01/2024 22:17

I use Paula’s choice which is a little more over your budget, but could be an option as they sell mini kits for you to try?
The Inkey List is also good, their oat cleanser and moisturiser are both really good value.

LuckyCharm9 · 30/01/2024 22:18

Makeup wise, the only thing I ever use is Erborian CC cream and the red correct in the green tube, so probably not much help there!

Pippa12 · 30/01/2024 22:19

I use boots essentials make up remover (white bottle/blue lid) It’s less than £2, removes all eye make up (including waterproof mascara!) with ease. I can’t believe everybody doesn’t use it- I never have panda eyes and it’s so gentle!

Day to day I use Liz Earle, cleanse and polish, toner, moisturiser. It’s middle of the road and my dry skin has survived the harsh winter weather without too much bother.

SocksAndTheCity · 30/01/2024 22:20

The Superdrug Vitamin E range is my go to, even after trying lots of more expensive stuff (Sunday Riley is my favourite of those, but it's £££).

The hot cloth cleanser and daily moisturising cream are fantastic and I've used both for years.

BuddhaAtSea · 30/01/2024 22:23

The ordinary. It’s been really good for me.

mrsfindlay · 30/01/2024 22:35

Thank you all for your suggestions so far, I will have a look at them all! Another thing, do you all use suncream on your face during the summer? Or do you rely on the spf in your moisturiser?

Okay, I think you need to go back to basics. You also need to try something and stick with it for a while - here's the basics: Cleanser, serum, moisturiser (different at night to day). Possibly face oil at night. SPF in the morning.

A note that as I was writing all this, it occurred to me that Sali Hughes might be a good option for you - she does a full range and has very dry skin herself. Also, the oil balm cleanser I recommend below is one of Sali Hughes' favourite products and I keep meaning to try her balm to see if it's similar at all.
https://www.revolutionbeauty.com/uk/en/skincare/sali-hughes).

Start with cleanser - you have dry skin, sounds a bit sensitive too. A good cleanser would therefore be an oil/ balm cleanser rather than anything foamy etc. I use a ridiculously overpriced one because I just love it (from Farmacy) and people on here rave about a similar one from Elemis. But you can get a good one for a reasonable price from the Body Shop - the camomile one - and M&S have a couple that I've heard people say are good on here too. I see Elf as one and I think their skin products are good.

You may want to try an exfoliator at some point or a cleanser with one. Maybe something with Salycic acid (Sali Hughes again? Or Neutrogena)

A broad, general serum is probably a good start at this point. I wouldn't overwhelm your skin with lots of different options. The Sali Hughes Must-C might be a good choice on the more budget side. I like the Clarins double Serum myself, and the Lancôme one gets good reviews. Both are more expensive but the Clarins one certainly lasts for a really long time so it's not as price per use as it seems based on the core price.

Moisturiser - you need something quite rich. Neutrogena do a couple of very hydrating options that are nice and I particularly like their night cream/gel (don't start with the retinol one - you're still young, try to get on top of general hydrating at this point). For day cream, I think Nivea Q10 is good and people are always raving about the Aldi one on here. I use the Elf hydrating one and like it a lot. If you do want to spend more, I like the Clarins day creams - multi active day is a good choice.

If you really want to, you could try a face oil at night. I don't use them a lot myself, but a lot of people love them. Again, M&S has a selection. I see Sali Hughes has one too which I didn't know about. I like the Clarins ones for when I do occasionally use a face oil.

SPF in the morning. essential. A lot of day creams have one already so that is a good start for now but keep in mind that a proper SPF is the best option longer term, especially as you go into summer. L'Oreal has a couple of good choices that are also nicely moisterising. I also bought a Boots one with vitamin C last year that was surprisingly nice on my skin.

make up - I've recently started the Elf primer and SPF in one and am liking it a lot. My all time favourite though is the Bobbi Brown Vitamin Enriched Face Base.

I use a tinted spf in the summer. It’s called Ultrasun

I wear Benefit mascara (pretty much unbudgeable) and my God, the Boots eye-make up remover in this 'value' range is fab! The best I've tried. And mega cheap too.

Sainsbury’s Vitamin E face cream in a tube is about £1 and really good! I’m mid 50s with decent skin but this just makes it feel soft and lovely!

It's very good, but a very confusing website (in my opinion). The Inkey List is a bit clearer and more user friendly.
OP, the Ordinary and the Inkey List are two excellent, budget friendly options. And certainly on the Inkey List website, they put together a whole beauty regimen for you (for cheap). It saves a lot of hassle.

Actually, sorry, the Superdrug Vitamin E range. I'm sure it's all the same though!

BananaSpanner · 30/01/2024 23:26

I use any old micellar water and/or Nivea face wash. Then Paula’s Choice liquid exfoliant which is brilliant for my pores. Then just a no7 night cream.

Daytime, use a L’Oréal moisturiser with spf.

The Primark micellar water is my fave. It's something like £2 for a big bottle.

Your skin sounds like it needs calming and moisture. I find serum sometimes inflame my skin.
I use elemis balm (wait for a sale, in my opinion 100% worth it). Then elf toner - the pixi glo toner is also good. And moisturise with M&S formula (revive for night - because I bought the wrong one, but it's lovely) m&s also does cleaning balms (apothecary) that's nice.
