I registered for self assessment weeks ago but when I go in my HMRC account t it doesn't show me any option to start the tax return. What am I doing wrong?

Not quite sure I understand why you’re on the self assessment bit - this page tells you what to do about child benefit overpayments.

https://www.gov.uk/repay-child-benefit-overpayments

Repay Child Benefit overpayments

Tell HMRC if you think your Child Benefit has been overpaid, how to repay an overpayment.

I got through to an agent really quickly on the online chat this evening at about 7pm. It started as an automated chatbot and redirected me to an agent when I asked to speak to somebody. Definitely worth a try they were very helpful and it was much quicker than calling.

@PuppyMonkey I don't think it counts as an overpayment. It deals with a change in circumstances.

If you click on the link you'll see it doesn't apply to the high income benefit charge which is what applies to me and says to register for self assessment.

I did eventually get the answer fill in an SA1 or whatever the form is so wonder if I need to do that rather than fill in the form and will try that.

Ok, you need to register for SA online services through your personal tax account. There should be a section saying add another service or something along those lines.

Did you register before 5th October 2023? That was the cut off for tax year 22/23. Once registered you normally receive your UTR within a week or two. Once it's been set you can access self assessment via the HMRC app and website.

If you registered after this date that could be causing an issue or there was an worried with the submission.

I think you will have to dedicate spending the whole of today getting hold of them, but be prepared that you will most likely receive a late filing penalty.

Remember it's taxable income that counts towards the CB thread hold, and there are several deductions that can be made. The bill might not be as bad as you fear.

The SA1 form is to register for self assessment. That's the one that sets you up to complete your self assessment and should have been done by October 5th.

Once you get that completed it will be a week or two until you get your UTR then you can complete your self assessment, get a calculation on what you owe and make the payment.

If you want to stop the child benefit payments you need to call a completely different team, so you could do this anyway separately.

I am getting an automated system on the chat and when I call.

It is frustrating because I have tried to do this several times now and I don't think I'm totally thick so it makes me think it isn't that easy to do!

I tried to register for self assessment ones then realised I had an email saying I hadn't completed it. I did it again. Didn't get an email saying I hadn't completed it but also have no code. I can't see the code in my account. I don't have the app and don't know my password but login to the pc from its password memory!

Off topic, but you can view your browser saved passwords. Where exactly they are stored varied by browser but generally under settings> security or somewhere like that.

Which year do you need to file for? 2022-2023 or 2023-2024?

How can she file for 23/24? Still 2 months left so she won't have end of year figures?

hottchocolate · 31/01/2024 11:47

I believed I had registered for self assessment prior to the deadline. I tried once and got an email saying I hadn't completed or submitted properly so I did it again and didn't get such an email. I also haven't received a UTR by email or post.

You must not have registered it correctly by the deadline because if you have, it’s really not difficult to do. Give them a call and stay on until you get an answer, as you have left it so late you’ll probably spend all day on hold with everybody else who has left it.

RoseGoldEagle · 31/01/2024 14:49

You'd think some of these posters had never left anything late in their lives, I think the OP is aware it's last minute, she's just asking for help! I had this last year OP, I thought I'd registered by the October date, but clearly and I hadn't somehow. I contacted them via the chat- they said it would take a few weeks to set up but they extended the deadline I had to pay by so I never got a fine.

Thanks @RoseGoldEagle
