How to shake off January blues

januaryblues0 · 30/01/2024 14:05

Have been feeling progressively more ‘blah’ as January has gone on. There’s no particular reason - I just feel very fed up and unenthusiastic about everything. Even very positive things - I lost 5 stone last year and went from being obese to a healthy weight - and got my dream job - I just feel very blah about it all.

My life isn’t particularly awful and I can’t identify a real reason as to why I feel down. I’ve already started taking some supplements, eating more healthily, and working towards goals career/health wise, but none of it is really making a difference. I just don’t feel myself - I have a holiday coming up and I’m not even looking forward to it.

Does anyone have any tips on how to shake off this unpleasant feeling/mindset?

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to hear that, it's a rubbish feeling to feel blah when you can't put a finger on why. For me, the thing that's really been helping is getting outside every day. Bonus points for a green space and double bonus points for sunshine. Good luck.

No words of wisdom but feel the same.

I have just upped my vitamin D dosage to help the mood a little.

Get something booked to look forward to.
A show, a night out with friends, a holiday, a gig etc etc.

Sometimes we just have to weather those times when we feel down. Are there any little things you enjoy that you can set aside time for, to give yourself something to look forward to, each day? Favourite TV or films or books to revisit? Listening to music you love? When I took time every evening to write a sentence or two about something good in my life or something I felt grateful for, that helped me feel more positive, as well.

It’s February on Thursday, and then we’re not far away from Spring

Endure.

Not immediately helpful, I know. But sometimes it’s just a case of slogging on for a few more weeks with the knowledge that it gets better.

Sounds like you've achieved a lot - well done! Sometimes when we have achieved big goals we can actually feel a bit flat afterwards because they've been so much a focus of our energy and then life does tend to carry on much as it always does. Do you have nice things to look forward to, as well as to look back on with deserved pride? Be it just getting some nice catch ups in the diary with friends and family, a nice pampering session if you're into massages, facials etc, or some day trips to new areas and attractions locally.

I know when you're feeling blah it can be hard to find the energy to look forward, but if you force yourself to plan one nice thing a week we'll be in Spring before you know it.

Oh and do make sure you're hitting the recommended Vit D limits. It's amazing how much difference that vitamin makes.

When did you hit those big goals OP? Because I agree with a PP that you can get the blues once something big has been attained - look up ‘gold medal syndrome’. You have done incredibly well!

otherwise it’s probably just the January blues. Make sure you are getting enough daylight and exercise. Eat well, sleep well, and know that Spring will be here soon!

I feel the same btw 🙂
