To wonder if differences between Scotland and rUK are generally known?

I see lots of posts about UK and British issues, that seem to refer to England only.

Is it generally understood that Scotland was a separate country pre 1707 and already had its own legal and education system in place, which were retained on the creation of the United Kingdom?

Therefore house buying, school exams, wills, divorce, university degrees, criminal law, policing etc have real distinct differences.

Are people who use the term UK not aware of the differences when refering/advising on something that affects England only?

Genuinely interested and not meaning to cause an argument. I find the differences really interesting, things like inheritance law when people ask about wills, or issues when a buyer pulls out of buying a house. I don't want to comment on new/current controversial legislation!

What about the less academic kids ?
My son isn't academic and he goes to college that offers all kinds of courses .

My DCs school has a lot of connections to trades and supports pupils to apply for apprenticeships in lots of different sectors, plus college options. It's definitely not all academic.

No you can't buy a pint at 9am.

Ah yes I misread the article I found on Scottish licensing... you can still buy it after 10pm in pubs and clubs with licenses, but the 10am rule also applies in pubs.

Nit that I want to buy a pint at 9am. But I did used to do my food shopping after school drop off, including a bit of wine or beer for the weekend!

But at least you can do your shopping on Sunday afternoon. Unlike the bonkers 6hrs opening rule in England.

@Marynotsocontrary in first reference I mean N Ireland.

But when I say about not realising you'd have to pay to see a doc in ROI, I just hadn't really thought of ROI as a distinctly different country with no NHS etc.

Appreciate that sounds awful, but to the point of the thread just being honest about not really thinking about it being different in the way I would think of France/Germany/etc being a different country.

I think you're far from alone in that thinking/not thinking.
I can see why people in Ireland find it annoying🤔

Dundee’s the same, generally working on local public holidays” rather than the national “bank holidays”

I might be out of touch with school holidays but I was sure our schools are off easter Monday if it falls outwith 😂 the Easter 2 weeks. I stand corrected though

I'm pretty sure that in Wetherspoons in Scotland you can have an alcoholic drink with breakfast before 10am.

Not in mine. I think it's 11am here as you see the regulars queuing up from around two minutes to 11.

Alcohol from 7am as long as you buy breakfast.

Mrsjayy · 31/01/2024 10:53

I just googled our weatherspoons and yes a pint and a bacon roll 🤢

they must ration that somehow?

Tarkan · 31/01/2024 10:55

No alcohol right now on the app at my one. In the breakfast menu when it says includes a drink you can only select hot drinks.

Mrsjayy · 31/01/2024 10:57

it's like the drinking at 6 am at airports I don't understand how that works.

Tarkan · 31/01/2024 11:02

That's alcoholic drinks available on the app at my local Spoons now so it's definitely 11am here.

I checked other local ones and I finally found one 40 miles (and two counties) away that had alcohol on the menu before 11am.

I think it’s premises dependent…with the caveat that this may have changed…I used to work within (as opposed to outwith 🤣)a role which dealt with licensed premises and the issuing of licenses…there were applications for places such as railway stations to have extensions to regular licensing hours “for the benefit of travellers and shift workers”. As I say this may have changed now, but that’s how it used to work

ah I see thank you for explaining. I know when my dad worked nightshift there was a pub near his work that opened in the morning for all the men finishing, swift pint then home to bed!

That may be true of the south but its certainly not the case the further north you go.

Many of us in the north are a mix of Scots and English, aware of the legal differences and rub along perfectly fine.

I live in the North East. Geordies are no better than Lincolnshire or Greater Manchester, where lived before

No better than what?

There is a lot more of a mixture of families here, cultural ties, dialects and genetics. Nobody bats an eye at using either currency for example.. Its normal so close to the border. Its not comparable at all to much further south like Lincolnshire.

No you can't buy a pint at 9am.

You can here in Ayr, as we have fishing rights.

PuttingDownRoots · 31/01/2024 17:26

Another niche difference... you don't need waterways licenses for canoes etc in Scotland.... but you do on many English rivers and canals.

There are places in Edinburgh (and I am sure elsewhere) where you can drink 24 hours a day as long as you have food.

Manys a time I've left a night club at 4am and headed to an Italian restaurant on Lothian Road for an ice cream and bottle of wine to share.

(when I was younger)

And no Trespassing Law in Scotland plus the Right to Roam.

BashfulClam · 31/01/2024 18:51

I’ve seen a lot of posts about weddings say it must be in a licences building etc in the uk. In Scotland you can get married anywhere.
