To be irritated at the many news reports on Rishi Sunak’s healthy lifestyle?

Just to caveat, this is light hearted - but also something that I’ve found annoying.

In the news today, there was an article about the 36-hour fasts that Rishi Sunak does every week, and how disciplined and determined this makes him.

Since he’s become PM, we’ve also had other reports about other lifestyle habits he swears by - Peloton workouts, alcohol abstinence (also though perhaps this is also a religious practice) and even what he eats for breakfast.

I don’t think it’s particularly interesting or important - or unusual - that someone does intermittent fasting or Peloton workouts. And I don’t think we’ve ever had so much media coverage of a PM’s health habits.

And Rishi Sunak’s government’s decisions and policies led to suffering and distress for so many people. He can choose whether or not to fast every time he does it, but lots of people in the country he leads have no choice - they have to ‘fast’ because crazy living costs force them to go without food.

AIBU? (I realise I don’t actually have to read the media coverage - but I read it anyway).

I doubt very much he is fasting with complete abstinence from all food and water for 36 hours .

Eating is permitted during fasting . It is very common to sit and eat one full vegetarian meal during the fast .

This is interesting… but the spokesman said he has literally nothing

According to the papers, he doesn’t eat during the fasts, but drinks water and black coffee etc) - https://www.standard.co.uk/news/uk/rishi-sunak-diet-intermittent-fasting-monday-b1135288.html

Rishi Sunak does not eat on Mondays due to intermittent fasting diet

PM's Hindu belief and determined diet plan sees him skip meals

I'm a politics junkie & didn't know any of this. Not encountered it even once (before).

What papers do you read, OP?

I mostly listen to radio & podcasts. BBC & 'Oh God What Now' mostly. Come to the soundscape to avoid the information you find so dull, is my best advice.

Oh, and the FT & Guardian politics podcasts.

Bit torn on this one really.

At least he's not a hypocrite, and actually living the healthy advice advocated by his government. I may be old fashioned but I do think leaders should be role models and not alleged criminals like Trump.

On the other hand I have never and would never vote Tory because they are a bag of dick weasels.

Are his government advocating 36 hour fasts? Or just imposing them? And having a peleton just shows yet again how immensely rich and privileged he is. What proportion of the country could afford the financial cost, or have the space for it? He probably doesn't even realise what an out of touch ivory tower inhabitant this makes him look

One of my Hindu friends at primary school would fast on a particular day each week . On the day she fasted ( we were primary school in the 70's) she would go home for lunch and sit and eat a vegetarian meal . All the food was was placed on the floor ( they sat on the floor on a floor covering with legs crossed) once you started eating you were not allowed to continue eating if you got up to get something.

By lunchtime she would have gone about 15 hrs without food ... went to bed say at 9pm the night before by lunch 15hrs would have passed ... I think she didn't eat for the rest of the day and would then eat the next day at breakfast... I imagine the PM does something similar.

Fasting in Hinduism dharma can take many different forms !

I saw it in the Times today, but it’s now been reported in other papers (e.g. the Evening Standard).
