To think my partner is worrying unnecessarily

Went to see my partner last night. Brought snacks to eat while we watched a film together in her living room, including some pistachio nuts that you have to take out of their shells.

We put them in a big bowl which I had on my lap on her sofa as we sat together.

when the film had finished, we spotted that a fair amount of nut debris/crumbs had fallen onto the sofa despite the bowl.

she’s been worrying ever since that if she sits on her sofa, she’ll get loads of nut traces on her clothes and might put people with nut allergies at risk when she goes out

is this a thing?

YABU = she is correct to worry and needs to wash all her sofa covers

YANBU = it’s really not something that she needs to worry about

Thanks

As a mum of a son with a pistachio allergy, I kind of love this. Very considerate, but a wee bit OTT.

I mean, if clothes are covered in nut residue, not a terrible idea to wash them. Still, I'd think any risk to a nut allergy sufferer is so low as to be theoretical.

To add to it, I put the bowl with the discarded shells on the kitchen table and we forgot to throw them out and wash out the bowl til the next day and her coat was on the back of a chair next to the table overnight. She’s anxious that her coat may be similarly ‘contaminated’ due to it being next to (though not touching) the bowl all night and is worried about wearing it

Your partner sounds quite ill and should probably get some help with anxiety.

Aquamarine1029 · 29/01/2024 12:56

She needs serious help for her anxiety. Urgently.

Mydogsbetterthanyours · 29/01/2024 13:18

This is classic contamination OCD (particularly the coat bit as it wasn't even touching the bowl she just FEELS like it might be contaminated). She needs to see a doctor.

Windymcwindyson · 29/01/2024 13:48

Does she worry about walking past a ddog? She could carry hair and pass that on.

DuploTrain · 29/01/2024 13:51

I hoover my sofa, it’s been a revelation.

But unless she has a friend/ family member with an allergy who is likely to visit then it does seem an extreme reaction

Snowdogsmitten · 29/01/2024 13:57

Ironically, she sounds nuts.

Snowdogsmitten · 29/01/2024 13:58

Actually, that wasn’t very kind. While she does sound a bit nuts, she mainly sounds very unwell. That level of anxiety is really unhealthy.

SouthEastCoast · 29/01/2024 14:00

This is very typical OCD, get her to read up about it. And ERP theraoy

Thank you
